Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been named a starter on the NBA Western Conference All-Star team, the league announced today. Curry, a first-time All-Star and the first Warriors player to be voted in by the fans as an All-Star starter since Latrell Sprewell in 1995, earned the most votes of any Western Conference backcourt player, receiving a total of 1,047,281 votes in the final returns of NBA All-Star Balloting 2014 presented by Sprint.
Curry, 25, is averaging career-highs of 23.5 points, 9.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds to go with 1.88 steals and 37.9 minutes in 40 games this season. Among NBA leaders, he ranks seventh in scoring, second in assists, third in three-point field goals and sixth in steals. The fifth-year point guard leads the NBA in 20-point/10-assist games with 11, including a league-leading five (5) games in which he’s tallied at least 30 points and 10 assists. Curry is on pace to become the first NBA player to average at least 23 points and nine assists in a single season since Tim Hardaway did so for the Warriors in 1991-92.
After setting the NBA single-season record with 272 three-pointers in 2012-13, Curry surpassed Jason Richardson as the Warriors’ all-time three-point leader on Dec. 7 at Memphis and is averaging a league-best 3.2 threes per game. The Davidson product has taken part in All-Star Weekend in three of his previous four seasons, winning the Skills Challenge in 2011 and twice participating in the Rising Stars Challenge (2010 and 2011) and Three-Point Contest (2010 and 2013).
Curry has helped lead the Warriors to a 26-17 record, including a 10-game winning streak from Dec. 21 to Jan. 7, despite playing a league-high 25 of their first 43 games on the road. Golden State tied a franchise-record by winning seven consecutive road games from Dec. 23 to Jan. 7.
Joining Curry in the Western Conference starting lineup are Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers) and Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves). The Eastern Conference starters include Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers), LeBron James (Miami Heat), Paul George (Indiana Pacers) and Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks). Curry was one of four players to receive over one million total votes, joining James (1,416,419), Durant (1,396,294) and George (1,211,318). Curry also becomes the first Warrior to lead his position in All-Star voting since Rick Barry led Western Conference forwards in 1976.
The 63rd NBA All-Star Game will be exclusively televised on TNT from New Orleans Arena on Sunday, February 16, 2014. The All-Star Game, also broadcast live on ESPN Radio, will collectively reach 215 countries and territories in more than 40 languages.
