Chris Murphy Named President of NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors

The NBA Champion Golden State Warriors announced today that Chris Murphy has been promoted to President of the Santa Cruz Warriors, the organization’s NBA Development League affiliate. Murphy will assume the position vacated by Jim Weyermann, who resigned earlier this month.

Murphy, 32, has overseen Golden State’s group sales efforts for the past five years, most recently serving as senior director of the Warriors’ group sales department after joining the team as an account executive in June 2005. A graduate of Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, Murphy has played an integral role in the development and continuation of the Warriors’ sellout streak, which currently stands at 139 consecutive home games since December 2012.

“We’re extremely pleased to have Chris in position to lead our business efforts with the Santa Cruz Warriors,” said Golden State Warriors President Rick Welts. “He’s done a terrific job of enhancing our ticket sales initiatives with the Warriors in recent years and he’s ready for a bigger challenge and an opportunity to expand his role within our organization. We truly view our Santa Cruz partnership as the perfect training ground for not only our players and coaches, but for front office personnel such as Chris. This is a great example of that synergy within the organization and a move that will benefit both the Warriors and Chris as we move forward.”

“I am truly excited about the opportunity to join a model organization like the Santa Cruz Warriors,” said Murphy. “The Warriors have had a tremendous impact on the court and, most importantly, the players, coaches and staff have touched thousands of lives in the Santa Cruz community. I look forward to building on the tradition that the team and community have forged together over the last three years.”

The Warriors’ NBA Development League affiliate relocated from Bismarck, North Dakota, to Santa Cruz in 2012, advancing to the D-League Finals in each of its first three years in Northern California and capturing the 2015 D-League Championship last April. The franchise earned the NBA D-League “Development Award” in 2013-14, an annual honor given to the team that best embodies the league’s goals of developing NBA basketball talent via GATORADE Call-Ups and assignments.
