Warriors Host Rookie Reading Rally Presented by Ross Stores
September 24, 2012
On September 21st, the Warriors and Ross Stores hosted the Warriors Rookie Reading Rally at Sobrante Park Elementary School in Oakland as the fifth and final day of Back to School in the Bay: 5 Schools in 5 days.
With more than 240 students in attendance, the rally was tipped off by two students, Quincy and Lauren, who introduced Warriors Hype Man Franco Finn to the stage.
Franco was the emcee for the event and welcomed everyone to the Warriors Rookie Reading Rally presented by Ross Stores. He also got all the students ready to welcome the rookies to the stage.
Harrison Barnes, Kent Bazemore, Festus Ezeli and Draymond Green were all in attendance to promote the importance of reading.
As the players were announced, they all high-fived the students as they entered the stage.
Once all the rookies made it onto the stage, Franco asked each of them what their favorite book was growing up and why reading was important to them.
Harrison spoke about the importance of reading and the positive impact it can have on your daily life.
Kent talked about his all-time favorite book growing up, "Mr. Popper's Penguins", and how reading has been a positive influence in his life.
Festus talked about reading being a tool that helps give you the knowledge to be prepared for different situations, like when he reads scouting reports in order to prepare for games.
Draymond spoke about how reading is fun and has helped him escape whatever is bothering him by being able to use his imagination to create a new world through reading. He ended on the note that without reading, none of the rookies would have been able to achieve the success they have reached today.
The four rookies each picked one lucky student to come on stage and participate in the “Name That Book” reading challenge where the students were given clues about popular children’s books.
The winner who answered the most questions correctly was presented with a special Warriors prize.
The winning team was Team Harrison.
At the end of the game, each player led the students in the Read to Achieve Pledge.
Kent Bazemore closed the rally by thanking Henry Choi, representative of Ross Stores, for sponsoring the Read To Achieve program and their commitment to literacy.
Afterwards, each student received a Warriors book cover, a Read to Achieve shirt and their own book to begin building their own personal library.
The Warriors rookies had a great time meeting the students at the Reading Rally and were happy to participate in such a worthwhile cause.
