Warriors Newcomer Jason Thompson Joins Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf At My Brother's Keeper Workshop September 21

On Monday, September 21, the Golden State Warriors held a “My Brother's Keeper Lessons in Leadership and Teamwork” workshop at the Warriors’ practice facility in downtown Oakland.   100 East Bay high-school students were gathered to candidly discuss issues affecting them and their underserved communities.  Joining the conversation was new Warriors big man Jason Thompson, who spoke to the students about what he has learned as a graduate of Rider University and his seven seasons in the NBA.

“We’re here to relay the importance of education at a young age and know that it is going to help them throughout their future,” said Thompson.  “Regardless of what happens with basketball, I have a college degree in Communications and TV/Radio to fall back on, and my story should empower students to use their education to their advantage.”

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf visited the workshop to address some issues that underprivileged youth face in Oakland today, and how open and honest discussions that arise from these workshops can promote a healthier and more vibrant community.

“We’re so thankful our NBA Champion Golden State Warriors are sharing Oakland’s power and inspiration, their example with Oakland’s talented and wise children,” said Schaaf. “Our youth are filled with unlimited potential, and we are excited the Warriors are helping us unleash it.”
