Warriors Host Get Fit Timeout Presented By Kaiser Permanente

As part of NBA FIT Live Healthy Week, Warriors All-Star guard Stephen Curry and Warriors Assistant Coach Jarron Collins, Warriors Head Athletic Trainer JoHan Wang, Warriors Assistant Athletic Trainer Drew Yoder joined NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton and WNBA Liberty Forward Swin Cash and Kaiser Permanente Executive Vice President & Northern California Group President Gregory Adams visited International Community School in Oakland for a Get Fit Time Out, presented by Kaiser Permanente. With more than 150 elementary school students present, the event also highlighted the national partnership deal between Kaiser Permanente and the NBA for the FIT program.

The program began with Warriors Hype Man Franco Finn welcoming all the students, community leaders and guest in attendance. Franco also thanked Kaiser Permanente for their sponsorship of the Warriors Get Fit program and for the NBA FIT program. Shortly after, Oakland Unified School District Deputy Chief of Community Schools and Students Services Curtiss Sarikey expressed his thanks for the Warriors, Kaiser Permanente and the NBA for coming together to provide meaningful health & wellness related programs, which help positively improve overall youth development and academic performance for students inside the classroom. Stephen Curry introduced Kaiser Permanente as the first-ever Official Health Care Partner of the NBA and celebrated the partnership by presenting Gregory Adams with a commemorative NBA FIT basketball. Gregory thanked Stephen and explained the importance of the partnership with the NBA and the Warriors and how they will play an integral role in expanding the reach and support of school-based health care services and youth development programs.

Shortly after, Franco hosted a brief Q & A with the guest in attendance. Swin talked about NBA FIT Live Healthy Week and shared that the focus of the fun-filled week as a time to celebrate the importance of healthy living through three simple pillars: be active, eat healthy and play together. Gregory shared how the partnership with NBA FIT aligns well with Kaiser Permanente’s “Thrive” campaign, which is focused on empowering people to maximize their health in mind, body and spirit. He also stressed the importance on focusing on total health at any age. Gary shared his experience growing up in Oakland, achieving his dream to play in the NBA and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle even after his NBA career. Stephen shared his commitment toward the Get Fit pledge and experiencing first-hand the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle year around. Franco discussed the Get Fit Challenge and shared with the students the Get Fit calendar and activity card they would receive as part of the program. Soon after, Stephen led all the students in the Warriors Get Fit Pledge.

To tip-off the activity portion of the clinic, Stephen and Gregory made their way to center court where they conducted the ceremonial tip. The clinic featured five stations, which included nutrition, basketball, speed & agility, strength & condition and yoga. Leading the five stations were, Warriors Assistant Coach Jarron Collins assisted Senior Youth Basketball Director at the basketball station, Warriors Head Athletic Trainer JoHan Wang and Warriors Assistant Athletic Trainer Drew Yoder hosted the speed and agility station, CSN Bay Area Sideline Reporter Rosalyn Gold-Onwude joined YogaWorks Yoga Instructors, Jenna and Kortney, at the yoga station, the nutrition station was hosted by Kaiser Permanente Physicians Dr. Thompson and Cindy Cosio, Swin joined Kaiser Permanente Physician Dr. Kapur and Be Fit to Live Trainer Omar Sanchez at the strength and conditioning station to interact with the youth. Stephen and Gary made sure to visit multiple stations throughout the clinic to encourage the student’s new found commitment toward healthy living.

At the end of the event, each student received a healthy lunch and a Warriors goodie bag courtesy of Kaiser Permanente filled with information on how to stay healthy and tools they can use and share with their families. All of the students also received a Get Fit t-shirt.
