Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace today announced the team has assigned forward Jarell Martin to the Iowa Energy, the Grizzlies’ NBA Development League affiliate.

Martin (6-10, 239) has appeared in 40 games (three starts) for the Grizzlies this season and averaged 3.9 points and 3.8 rebounds in 13.5 minutes. The 22-year-old competed in 10 games (six starts) as a rookie last season for the Energy and recorded 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in 28.9 minutes.

A native of Baton Rouge, La., Martin was drafted by Memphis in the first round (25th overall) of the 2015 NBA Draft following his sophomore season at Louisiana State University.

Grizzlies assign Jarell Martin to Iowa Energy

The Iowa Energy announced today that Head Coach Matt Woodley has been relieved of his head coaching duties, effective immediately.

Glynn Cyprien, a native of New Orleans, has been named Interim Head Coach of the Energy.

Glynn Cyprien joined the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2014-15 season as basketball operations assistant/scout, returning to the city where he helped guide the University of Memphis to 49 victories and consecutive postseason tournament appearances in two seasons (2009-11) as an assistant coach under Josh Pastner. The Tigers went 25-10 during the 2010-11 season, winning the Conference USA Tournament Championship and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Widely considered one of the top assistants and recruiters in the country during his years on the collegiate scene, Cyprien coached or recruited current and former NBA players such as Tony Allen, Khris Middleton, Patrick Patterson, Patrick Beverley, Jodie Meeks, Will Barton, Sonny Weems, Josh Harrellson, John Lucas III and Shawn Marion.

Before returning to Memphis, Cyprien served three seasons (2011-14) as associate head coach at Texas A&amp;M University. His resume also includes assistant coaching stints with the University of Kentucky (2007-09), the University of Arkansas (2006-07), New Mexico State University (2005-06), Oklahoma State University (2000-04), the University of Nevada Las Vegas (1995-2000), Western Kentucky University (1994-95), Jacksonville University (1991-94), Lamar University (1990-91) and the University of Texas-San Antonio (1987-90).

The New Orleans native lettered two seasons as a player at Southern University-New Orleans and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from UTSA in 2004.

Baldwin (6-4, 202) has appeared in six games (all starts) in two assignments with the Energy and averaged 15.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 27.0 minutes. The 20-year-old Belle Mead, N.J. native has appeared in 20 games (one start) for the Grizzlies and averaged 3.9 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 14.5 minutes since he was drafted by Memphis in the first round (17th overall) of the 2016 NBA Draft following his sophomore season at Vanderbilt University.

Baldwin (6-4, 202) has appeared in nine games (one start) for the Grizzlies and averaged 3.1 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 15.9 minutes since he was drafted by Memphis in the first round (17th overall) of the 2016 NBA Draft. The 20-year-old Belle Mead, N.J. native played two seasons at Vanderbilt University, where he was named Second Team All-Southeastern Conference by the coaches as a sophomore after finishing third in the SEC in assists.

Grizzlies assign Wade Baldwin IV to Iowa Energy

The Iowa Energy, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies, will hold their annual open player tryouts for the upcoming 2016-17 season on Sunday, Oct. 9 from 1-5 p.m. at the Hyde Gym on the Memphis University School campus (6191 Park Ave., Memphis, TN 38119). Doors will open for registration at noon.

“Open tryouts are a great opportunity for players to showcase their abilities to our staff. They have consistently been a major factor in our roster building process,” Grizzlies Director of Basketball Operations Chris Makris said. “We’re excited to see the next crop of talent competing for a spot on our roster this year.”

Players who participate in the open tryouts will be observed and evaluated by members of the Memphis Grizzlies and Iowa Energy basketball operations staffs.

Grizzlies' NBA Development League affiliate Iowa Energy to host open player tryouts in Memphis on October 9

The Memphis Grizzlies today announced that Matt Woodley has been named head coach of the Iowa Energy, the team’s NBA Development League affiliate. Woodley becomes the fifth head coach in franchise history after spending the past two seasons with the Energy organization.

Woodley, who served as associate head coach last season, joined the Energy as an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season.

“We are pleased to announce Matt as head coach of the Iowa Energy,” Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace said. “As evidenced last season, our affiliation with the Iowa Energy provides us a critical resource in the development of our players and institution of our organization’s philosophies. Matt’s coaching acumen and background within the Energy franchise make him a terrific fit.”

“We are excited to promote Matt and are confident he is the right person to continue the proud history of Iowa Energy basketball,” said Energy General Manager &amp; Grizzlies Director of Basketball Operations Chris Makris. “Matt has readied himself for this position by playing a tremendous role in the development of our players during his two seasons with our organization.”

Prior to joining the Energy, Woodley served as head coach of the Truman State Bulldogs men’s basketball program for three seasons (2011-2014). He guided the Bulldogs to the 2013 MIAA Tournament while three players earned All-MIAA honors. In addition, Woodley also served as an assistant coach at Washington State University (2006-09), Middle Tennessee State University (2004-06) and the University of Denver (2001-04).

Woodley graduated in 2000 from Drake University with a degree in elementary education and played three seasons for the Bulldogs.  He started 83 games and finished his career as the all-time leader in steals and second all-time in three-pointers.  During his senior season, Woodley was named the team’s MVP.

Woodley comes from a family of coaches; his father Mike is the head coach of the Grand View University football team while his brother Joe is the associate head coach. His brother Brian is the head coach of the Johnston High School varsity football team and his brother Andy is an assistant coach of the Grand View University men’s basketball program.

Memphis Grizzlies name Matt Woodley Head Coach of the Iowa Energy

The Iowa Energy announced that Head Coach Bob Donewald, Jr.  will not be returning next season.

“We want to thank Bob for his contributions to the Iowa Energy and Memphis Grizzlies over the past two seasons. Bob was a major part of the development of our players during his tenure and wish him the best as he moves on to new opportunities in the professional basketball world,” said Energy General Manager &amp; Grizzlies Director of Basketball Operations Chris Makris.

Donewald compiled a 52-48 record with the Energy, including a 26-24 record during the 2015-16 season.  During Donewald’s tenure, six different Energy players earned nine Call-Ups to the NBA, along with the Grizzlies assigning five players to develop with the Energy.

A search for the next head coach of the Energy will begin immediately.

The Memphis Grizzlies re-assigned forward Jarell Martin to the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Iowa Energy, Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace announced today.

Martin (6-10, 239) has appeared in three games for the Grizzlies during his rookie season and totaled two points in 12 minutes. The 21-year-old was drafted by Memphis in the first round (25th overall) of the 2015 NBA Draft following his sophomore season at the Louisiana State University. This marks his sixth assignment to Iowa, where he has averaged 13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds in 30.6 minutes in seven games (six starts).
