Thanasis Rotimi Antetokounmpo was born in Athens in 1992. As the second of five sons to Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, Thanasis comes from a basketball family. He is teammates in Milwaukee with his brother Giannis, who is the reigning Most Valuable Player of the Eastern Conference (2018-19). Their brother Kostas currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Alexander, the youngest in the family, is attending Domenican High School in Milwaukee and is a member of their basketball team. In 2016, Antetokounmpo played with Andorra of the Spanish ACB, appearing in 34 games and averaging 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 46.0 percent from the field. The next year, he managed 67 games with Panathinaikos in both EuroLeague and Greek Basket League action, and was named the Greek Basket League's Most Spectacular Player after averaging 5.6 points and 2.7 rebounds in 13.7 minutes while shooting 55.8 percent from the field. He played on the fourth-division team in 2010-11 and played with his sibling for the third-division Greek team in 2011-12. The 6-7 forward turned pro for 2012-13 in the Greek second division at Filathlitikos where he provided 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals. Antetokounmpo played in the 2013 Greek League All-Star Game and competed in the slam dunk contest. He declared for the 2013 Draft, but withdrew and returned to Filathlitikos. He played in four games for the Greek team and averaged 16.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 30.0 minutes before moving to the D-League.
