Ishmael Larry Smith was born in 1998 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the son of Gwen and Larry Smith. Smith attended Central Cabarrus High School in Concord, North Carolina. As a high school senior, Smith averaged 24.8 points and 9.8 assists per game and earned MECA-6 Conference Player of the Year honors. He was also named the Charlotte Observer's 2016 Piedmont Player of the Year and earned all-conference honors his junior and senior years (2005-06). While at Wake Forest University, Smith earned a degree in religion. His community interests includes youth basketball clinics and the Boys and Girls Club. While with the Pistons, Smith participated in the Pistons Player Ticket Section, which purchases game tickets for underprivileged groups. Smith also participated in the 2017 Seeds of Peace Camp. Smith is the only player in Wake Forest basketball history to record more than 1,000 points (1,114) and 600 assists (612) over his career. The assist total was second all time at Wake Forest when he graduated in 2010. The Concord, North Carolina native led the ACC in average minutes played (36.8) in his senior year when he was named to the All-ACC second team. The guard led the Demon Deacons in assists (185), steals (52) and field goals (176) in 2009-10 while also finishing second in points per game (13.2). His average of 6.0 assists ranked him third in the ACC and seventh nationally. Smith went undrafted during the 2010 NBA Draft and signed as a free agent with the Rockets not long after.
