Jaylen Clinton Andrew Nowell was born in Seattle in 1999. Both of Nowell's parents, Lanie and Mike, played collegiate basketball at Clark Atlanta University. Nowell attended Garfield High School in Seattle, the same school that produced former NBA guards Brandon Roy, Will Conroy and Tony Wroten. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, helping Garfield to the Class 3A KingCo Championship. As a junior, Nowell's 17.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game netted him USA Today All-Washington second-team honors. After high school, Nowell took his talents to the University of Washington, choosing to play for the Huskies over the likes of Stanford, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of Oregon.
