Two of the NBA’s top scorers, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid, will face off tonight when the Milwaukee Bucks host the Philadelphia 76ers in an Eastern Conference showdown (8:30 ET, ABC). Antetokounmpo ranks fourth in the NBA at 31.3 points per game and Embiid is second at 33.0.
Here are five stats to know for tonight’s primetime matchup.
1. Bucks enter Saturday’s game riding a 16-game win streak
Milwaukee’s 16 straight victories ties for the third longest win streak in franchise history. The Bucks are two wins away from matching their 18-game streak from 2019 and four wins from matching the franchise record of 20 set in 1971.
During the win streak – which began on Jan. 23 – the Bucks have the league’s top defensive rating (105.8), rank 11th best offensive rating (117.8) and first in net rating (12.0) Prior to the win streak, the Bucks ranked third in defensive rating (110.3), 23rd in offensive rating (111.4) and 11th in net rating (1.0).
Milwaukee’s improvement on both ends of the court can be seen when examining effective field goal percentage. On offense, Milwaukee’s eFG% jumped from 53.4% (19th) to 57.8% (6th), an improvement of 4.4 percentage points. On defense, Milwaukee’s opponent eFG% improved from 51.9% (3rd) to 49.6% (1st), an improvement of 2.3 percentage points.
2. Scoring duos battle
The Sixers and Bucks have the third- and fifth-ranked scoring duo in the league, respectively. Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and James Harden combine to average 54.7 points per game, while Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday combine to average 51.1 ppg.
Here are the top 5 scoring duos in the NBA, through games played March 2:
• Luka Doncic / Kyrie Irving (Dallas): 59.7 ppg
• Jayson Tatum / Jaylen Brown (Boston): 56.6 ppg
• Joel Embiid / James Harden (Philadelphia): 54.7 ppg
• Damian Lillard / Anfernee Simons (Portland): 53.4 ppg
• Giannis Antetokounmpo / Jrue Holiday (Milwaukee): 51.1 ppg
Note: Phoenix’s Devin Booker and Kevin Durant (60 points in one game as teammates) would have made this top five, but neither has met the minimum games played to qualify as a scoring leader this season.
3. Two of the NBA’s top scorers face off
Embiid and Antetokounmpo are both averaging at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and four assists so far this season. Those marks have been reached only 13 times in NBA history prior to this season, including Emiid last season. If he can maintain these marks over Milwaukee’s final 20 games, Giannis would be the eighth player to post those numbers over a full season, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (three times), Elgin Baylor (three times), Wilt Chamberlain (twice), Oscar Robertson (twice), Bob McAdoo, Russell Westbrook and Embiid.
4. Third meeting of the season between teams
The Bucks and Sixers play for the third time this season with the teams splitting their first two games, both in Philadelphia. The Bucks won the first meeting 90-88 in their season opener on Oct. 20; it is Milwaukee’s only win this season when scoring fewer than 104 points; they are 1-10 in such games this season. Embiid (32 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks) led the Sixers to a 110-102 win on Nov. 18 as the Sixes played without Harden and the Bucks played without Khris Middleton.
5. Defenders to watch
Brook Lopez has been Milwaukee’s primary defender on Embiid in the season series. In 20:45 of matchup time, Embiid has scored 38 points against Lopez, but shot just 17-of-41 (41.5%) from the field and 2-of-7 (28.6%) from 3-point range with Lopez forcing four turnovers and blocking four shots by Embiid.
P.J Tucker has been Philadelphia’s primary defender on Giannis in the season series. In 17:39 of matchup time, Giannis has scored 21 points and dished out eight assists against Tucker, serving more as a playmaker than a scorer as the Bucks have scored 94 team points in the matchup. Individually, Tucker has held Giannis to 9-of-20 shooting (45%) from the field and 1-of-3 (33.3%) from 3-point range, while only allowing three free throws.
