It’s officially draft week, and the Lakers are hosting some late workouts for collegiate talent. On Monday, six more potential draftees visited the team’s headquarters in hopes of being chosen on Thursday.

Zach Collins | PF/C | Gonzaga | 7’0 | 230 | Fr.
A key member of Gonzaga’s run to the NCAA title game, Collins earned All-Tournament Team honors primarily through his rim protection, swatting 3.0 shots per game. On the other end, he was efficient with his offense throughout the year, shooting the nation’s fourth-best true shooting percentage (70.3) while averaging 10.0 points.

“I definitely think shooting will be a big part of my game,” Collins said. “It will help me because I think a guy that can go in the post and shoot and drive and put the ball on the floor — a guy like that is going to be hard to guard in the NBA.”

Avry Holmes | PG | Clemson | 6’2 | 195 | Sr.
Holmes provided plenty of spacing for the Tigers, hitting 44.2 percent of his 3-point looks and 2.1 triples per game. He also put up 10.3 points and sunk 81.5 percent at the foul line.

Luke Nelson | PG | UC Irvine | 6’3 | 190 | Sr.
A two-time First Team All-Big West selection, Nelson was recognized as his conference’s best this season by receiving its Player of the Year award. The Great Britain native was a do-it-all kind of star for the Anteaters, putting up 16.9 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 3-pointers.

Nelson said that his basketball upbringing in England was influenced by Lakers forward Luol Deng, who lived much of his youth in London and played for the Great Britain national team.

“As a 16-year-old kid playing international basketball, my team had a great run and we made it to the final,” Nelson said. “We actually had a message through our coach from Luol, who said, ‘Great job, keep going.’ That kind of stuck with me. … For him to see that and appreciate that was special for us.”

Luke Petrasek | SF/PF | Columbia | 6’10 | 230 | Sr.
An efficient scorer, Petrasek provided the Ivy League’s fourth-most points (15.1) on its third-best field goal percentage (48.7). He was liable to pop off at any moment, like when he dropped 31 points on Cornell this year.

Seab Webster | PF | Alabama-Huntsville | 6’6 | 225 | Sr.
Twice named to the All-Gulf South Conference First Team, Webster wrapped up his collegiate career by averaging 18.8 points and 8.0 rebounds. He also provided the Chargers with 2.8 3-pointers on a 41.6 percent mark from beyond the arc.

Lakers Draft Workout: June 19, 2017

admin

Cole Huff | A | Creighton | 6’8 | 210 | Sr.

Seab Webster | A | Alabama-Huntsville | 6’6 | 225 | Sr.

Devin Robinson | A | Florida | 6’8 | 195 | Jr.

Tyler Cavanaugh | AP | George Washington | 6’9 | 243 | Sr.

Isaiah Hicks | AP | North Carolina | 6’9 | 242 | Sr.

Michael Smith | E | California Baptist | 6’4 | 195 | Sr.

Markelle Fultz knows that he’s got plenty of competition from his fellow point guards in this year’s draft.

Most mock drafts have three point guards among the top five picks, while as much as half of the top 10 is filled by that same position.

But Fultz, who is projected by most to be the top pick, expressed confidence in his standing after working out for the Lakers on Thursday.

“I believe I fill in every box on both sides of the floor,” Fultz said. “I think that’s what the difference is.”

Fultz said that it was a “family decision” to come to El Segundo and work out for the Lakers with exactly one week left until draft day.

He wants to be the first overall pick, but said he would also embrace going to the Lakers, who own the second selection.

“I would like to go one, but wherever I land is where I go,” Fultz said.

The Third Team All-American went through an individual workout for the Lakers. Afterward, he had plans to go to lunch with the front office brass and check out the team’s new practice facility that is being built a few minutes away.

He said the workout was more casual than when he first met Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka at the NBA Draft Combine in May.

“They don’t got on suits and stuff, so they’re a little more relaxed,” Fultz smiled. “Then I’m in my home (the gym), where I love to play at. So that’s even better with me not being all dressed up, too. Just me being out here, being myself.”

Fultz said that the Lakers wanted to see how he handled the screen-and-roll on both sides of the ball. He also relayed that they evaluated his 3-point shot and that he felt he showed off proper mechanics.

The 19-year-old was an offensive dynamo at Washington, scoring the nation’s sixth-most points (23.2), while also averaging 5.9 assists.

With his size — 6-foot-4, 195 pounds — and ability to score at all three levels, Fultz aims to translate that firepower to the next level.

Fultz has confidence that his skill set will serve him well against the class’ other point guards, including UCLA’s Lonzo Ball, whom he has been compared to since they both entered the Pac-12 this year.

While Ball’s Bruins won the only matchup between the two in college, Fultz is ready to continue their clashes in the NBA.

“I’m a competitor, so anybody that’s in front of me I’m gonna try to take them out,” Fultz said. “Lonzo’s a great guard and we’re both competing for the same position. So just stepping out on the court, I’m gonna try to beat him in everything I do. If that’s tying my shoe faster, anything — it really doesn’t matter.”

Lakers Bring In Markelle Fultz for Workout

Mike Trudell

The Lakers' path to the NBA Draft continues in the final days before decision time. On Thursday, they got to take a look at one of the class' most trumpeted prospects, as Washington point guard Markelle Fultz worked out for the team in El Segundo.

Below is a full transcription from Fultz's media session:

Q: On what he showed in his workout:
Fultz: I just think the way I can shoot the ball, my work ethic, how hard I play.

Q: On if it was hard physically:
Fultz: When you work out by yourself it’s pretty difficult, but I think I did a good job of just pushing myself as hard as I could.

Q: On why he came to workout for the Lakers given that most mock drafts have him going No. 1:
Fultz: I think it was a family decision, just going through it. Giving everybody the opportunity. Never know where I might land, so just wanted to see how it is out here.

Q: On if he has other workouts planned:
Fultz: Not that I’m sure of. Still have to talk to my family after this one just like I did after the last workout and see what we’re going to do.

Q: On some specifics that he did in the workout:
Fultz: We did some screen and roll stuff, see how I played through the screen and roll. Shooting some threes, getting to the rim. Just different type of finishes and seeing how I score off screen and roll, pretty much.

Q: On if it matters to him where he’s drafted:
Fultz: It doesn’t matter to me. I’m blessed to play the game. I’d like to go (No.) 1, but wherever I land is where I go.

Q: On any feedback he received:
Fultz: Just a pretty good job. They saw that I worked hard. They saw that I had the mechanics to shoot the ball right and everything like that. So that’s all that really matters.

Q: On what he learned about the Lakers:
Fultz: Just building a better relationship with them. Coming out here, seeing the facility. Seeing the owners … a little bit more relaxed (than the Chicago combine). I’m in my home where I love to play at (on the court).

Q: On his plans with the Lakers for the day:
Fultz: I’ll probably eat lunch and go see the (new) facility.

Q: On being in Los Angeles with the Hollywood lights and so on:
Fultz: Really to me it doesn’t matter. Wherever I go I’ll be the same guy. I’m going to be humble. Of course coming here, like you said, the Hollywood life, it’s going to be great publicity. I’d get my brand out there and just building myself.

Q: On the other PG’s in the draft:
Fultz: I respect all of them. They all got different types of games. I believe I fill in every box on both ends of the floor. I think that’s what the difference is.

Q: On playing with D’Angelo Russell:
Fultz: I think I fit well. He can play off (ball) at the two, I can play off at the two. We’d fit together. Basketball players who are pretty good at what they do learn how to play with each other.

Q: On the last time he played 5-on-5:
Fultz: It’s been a long time since I’ve played 5-on-5. It’s getting to me.

Q: On being excited for summer league:
Fultz: Definitely, just to get out there and play with my teammates (on) whatever team I go to. I just love the game, so whenever I get a chance to play it makes me happy.

Q: On how he approached leadership role at Washington:
Fultz: Going in there at first being a freshman it’s kind of hard with the seniors and stuff. As the season went on, I’ve always (been) a guy to lead by example. Just building my character to speak more and things like that. Going in there I really built a leadership role.

Q: On losing so much at Washington:
Fultz: It was very tough. Nobody went in thinking we were going to lose that many games. But I think I built relationships and we learned more than you could ever learn losing that many games. How to fight through adversity, sticking together, sticking with each other through everything off the court, on the court. I think that was pretty big.

Q: On finding motivation from Lonzo Ball:
Fultz: I’m a competitor, so anybody that’s in front of me I’m going to try and take them out. Lonzo is a great guard, so we’re both competing for the same position. Stepping on the court, I’m going to try and beat him in everything I do. If that’s tying my shoe faster or anything.

Q: On his strengths and weaknesses:
Fultz: I think my biggest strength is just playmaking ability, on or off the ball, scoring the ball, getting assists, rebounding. Doing pretty much anything to impact the game. I think the stuff I need to work on is more on the defensive end. Just team defense, being locked in every possession. I wouldn’t say I’m a terrible defender, it’s just being locked in … fighting through fatigue. Saying I’m going to not let me guy score, and being in a position I need to be in if my teammates get blown by or something like that.

Q: More from the Lakers perspective:
Fultz: They love what I do. I appreciate them for giving me this opportunity. I’m just a good kid. They mostly spoke about off the court.

Q: On if he could see himself being a Laker:
Fultz: For sure. I could see myself playing here. It’s a great city, a great team. A lot history behind this team.

Q: On playing alongside a young core:
Fultz: I thought about both. Being a young team, would pretty much feel like college again. But either/or. Coming to a young team or an old team, I’m just blessed to play the game.

Q: On his next steps to get ready for the draft:
Fultz: After this workout, going home, sitting down with my parents, see if we’re going to take any more visits and then just getting ready for that process. It’s going to be an unbelievable process, something I’ve been dreaming of since I was a kid so I’m really looking forward to it.

Lakers Draft Workout: Markelle Fultz

The Lakers are within a week of the NBA Draft, but that hasn’t stopped the evaluation process. With only six days till they can use their No. 2 and 28 picks, the purple and gold worked out another round of collegiate prospects on Friday.

Jabari Bird | SG | California | 6’6 | 190 | Sr.
An All-Pac-12 honorable mention, Bird was a long-range threat for Cal, hitting 2.4 3-pointers a night on a 36.3 percent clip. He said that he almost beat the Lakers' workout record during their shooting drill, earning a round of applause from those in the gym.

"It was pretty fun," Bird said. "I knew the record was 27 and I was trying to beat it, but I had my foot on the line a few times. So technically I got it, but I got to take a step back for the NBA 3 to get it."

James Blackmon | SG | Indiana | 6’4 | 195 | Jr.
Possibly the best sharpshooter in the Big Ten, Blackmon led the conference by hitting 42.3 percent of his looks from downtown. He also averaged the league's fourth-most points (17.0) on his way to an all-conference honorable mention.

Tyler Cavanaugh | SF/PF | George Washington | 6’9 | 243 | Sr.
A double-double regular, Cavanaugh ranked sixth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring (18.3), while snagging its third-most rebounds (8.4). He shined brightest the year before during George Washington's run to the 2016 NIT championship, as he put up 19.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.2 triples on his way to the tournament's MVP award.

Isaiah Hicks | PF | North Carolina | 6’9 | 242 | Sr.
As a member of UNC's championship team, Hicks put up 11.8 points and 5.5 rebounds while playing physically and picking up 3.1 fouls per game. The year before, he was named ACC Sixth Man of the Year, as he put up 8.9 points on 61.4 percent shooting.

Devin Robinson | SF/PF | Florida | 6’8 | 195 | Jr.
Owner of a 7-foot-1 wingspan, Robinson seeks to put his length to good use in the NBA after averaging 11.1 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Gators. He made big strides offensively in his journey to becoming a 3 and D wing, as he improved his 3-point stroke from 25.6 percent as a freshman to 39.1 as a junior.

"It was a lot of shots in the gym," Robinson said of his improved clip. "When I got hurt my sophomore year, that whole summer I was shooting the ball in a chair, working on my form because I couldn't work out. I feel like that was a big contribution to my increase in numbers."

Michael Smith | PG/SG | Cal Baptist | 6’4 | 195 | Sr.
Possibly the most decorated player in Pacwest history, Smith was named the conference's Player of the Year for each of the past two seasons and left Riverside as the league's all-time leading scorer (2,031). In his final year with the Lancers, he led the Pacwest in scoring by pouring in 24.9 points per contest.

Lakers Draft Workouts: June 16, 2017

What would it look like having two lengthy, bouncy, athletic wings playing on opposite sides of the court for the Lakers?

With Brandon Ingram already in tow, that question becomes of interest in consideration with Josh Jackson’s workout on Tuesday at the team’s facility in El Segundo.

The 6-foot-8, 207-pound freshman out of Kansas produced 16.3 points per game on 51.3 percent from the field plus 7.4 boards, 3.0 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks, showcasing what may be his best skill at the next level: versatility.

“The NBA is changing so much,” Jackson said when we asked him how he might look alongside another long wing. “You look at two of the best teams in the league: Cavs and Warriors. At the end of the game when it’s winning time, there is no five-man on the court; there is no four-man on the court. There’s pretty much forwards and guards all playing at the same time. So I don’t really think me and Brandon being the same position would cause any problems. I think it would be really special, honestly.”

To offer an oversimplified version of things: the Lakers could target a guard like Lonzo Ball or Markelle Fultz who would immediately help the offense, or a player like Jackson could help more in building a versatile, defensive group.

I asked Jackson where he thinks he fits best on both ends of an NBA floor.

“With the way the game is going today, I think I can guard one through four,” he said. “But back then probably 10 years ago, your four-man probably would have been 6’10” or something like that, so probably not. But the way the game is changing so much today, versatility is pretty important and I think I bring a lot to the table, especially being to switch on any position except the five.”

Perhaps most naturally a three given his frame, Jackson will have to improve his shot (37.8 percent from three at KU) to play 2/3, and his ball handling to play PG. But he did showcase really good vision as a playmaker at times for the Jayhawks, much like Ingram was able to do, even if not his primary skill.

“I think I can play pretty much one through four for an NBA team,” Jackson continued. “Playing the four at Kansas really helped me out a lot. I wasn’t too excited about playing the four coming into Kansas, but we caused a lot of mismatch problems, and I think it really bettered me as a player.”

The good thing about L.A.’s young players is that versatility is already a strength. Ingram, D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance, Jr. and Julius Randle can all play at least two NBA positions. Ivica Zubac, purely a center, is the exception.

As such, they can essentially target the player they think will be the best overall.

The 20-year-old offered his own summary of his strengths and weaknesses.

“My strengths: quick, versatile, athletic, a great passer,” he listed. “Weaknesses: probably ball handling a little bit and probably still my shooting stroke. But both of those are coming along.”

This was Magic Johnson and co.’s second look at Jackson, whom they saw in Sacramento last week.

“When I was in Sac I was working out with my trainer,” Jackson summarized. “I work out with him every day and I’m comfortable with him and know what he wants me to do. We’ve got the same terminology. We’re familiar with each other. Coming out here, I gotta learn a little bit more of their terminology and things they like to do. They put me in a few instances where I would probably be in their offense … hopefully I impressed them.”

Just how much Jackson impressed them could impact their decision come draft day, though of course, it’s just another part of the total package that’s been ongoing throughout the year for him and several other players.

De’Aaron Fox was in for his own workout earlier on Tuesday; Fultz will be at the team’s facility for the first time on Thursday; and they’ll likely take another look at Ball as well.
