Sometimes it’s hard to have faith in something you’ve never seen, or to support a team you’ve never cheered on in person. However, in the Australian town of Hay, Mick Montgomery roots for the Thunder from more than 9,000 miles away.

Mick has been a fan of the NBA for 18 years in Australia, a country primarily dominated in sports by rugby and cricket.

“When I was about 16, we had very limited coverage of the NBA in Australia and I had a hook-up from the States who would record games on VHS and send them to me in the mail,” said Mick.

Mick loves all NBA action, but his favorite team is easily the Thunder.

“I went with the Thunder and have been loving the ride so far,” he stated.

Although he’s never been to a game, Mick keeps up to date with the team through thunder.nba.com, various websites and is even able to catch a few games on television. Even with a nine-hour time difference, Mick admits he plans his schedule around the team.

“We get some coverage of the NBA on TV here in Australia, but it’s barely enough to satisfy my appetite,” Mick said.

“I’m constantly on the Net checking scores and trying to organize my life around Thunder games. The time difference between here and Oklahoma makes this challenging.” Mick said he does have some company in Australia when cheering on the Thunder. A couple of his mates have also come on board as Thunder fans.

“The Thunder star is definitely on the rise Down Under!” he said.

Thunder fans span the globe and more can be found through the team’s fan-based, interactive community site, THUNDERALLY.
