Thunder Invitation to Teachers: Join Devon Thunder Explorers

Oklahoma City, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016 – The Oklahoma City Thunder has partnered with Devon Energy to add some Thunder fun to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in Oklahoma classrooms with the Devon Thunder Explorers.

Classrooms that join the program will be challenged to complete monthly activities with a basketball theme that highlight STEM concepts. Every month from October through April, four participating teachers will be selected to win $500 for their classrooms.

The program is open to fourth- through sixth-grade classrooms in Oklahoma. Teachers can become eligible for the monthly prize by posting photos or videos of their classes taking part in that month’s activity to Twitter or Instagram using #DevonThunderExplorers.

“Community and education leaders across the state have recognized the need to develop STEM education to prepare Oklahoma students for success in the workforce,” said Christine Berney, Thunder vice president of Community Relations. “We hope that this program uses our young fans’ excitement for Thunder Basketball to spark a passion for STEM, and we are thrilled to again partner with Devon Energy for this program.”

“At Devon, one of our goals is to promote vibrant communities, and that includes supporting ingenuity in education,” said Christina Rehkop, Devon’s manager of community relations. “Our company has identified STEM instruction and learning as a top priority, so we’re pleased and proud once again to participate in the Devon Thunder Explorers program.”

Teachers can sign up for the Devon Thunder Explorers now at okcthunder.com/explorers. All fans are asked to share program details with fourth- through sixth-grade teachers in Oklahoma and encourage them to sign up.
