Thunder to Break Ground on New Court in Woodward

Oklahoma City, Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 – The Oklahoma City Thunder and the Thunder Cares Foundation will soon break ground on a basketball court at Crystal Beach Park in Woodward, the team announced today. The project marks the 14th court built or refurbished by the foundation in Oklahoma.

The new Thunder blue court, which is scheduled to be completed and unveiled this fall, will offer kids in Woodward a place to keep fit and fuel their passion for basketball.

“We are thrilled to work with the City of Woodward and bring a new basketball court to Crystal Beach Park,” said Christine Berney, vice president of Community Relations for the Thunder. “We are excited for the opportunity to give the kids in this community a fun place to stay healthy, keep active and play basketball.”

“A Thunder Court in Crystal Beach Park is the perfect fit!” said Woodward City Manager Alan Riffel. “It’s first-rate as a playing surface, and having the Thunder sponsorship puts it over the top as an exciting venue. I’m sure it will be one of the most popular spots in the park!”

This will be the third Thunder Cares Foundation court built on a new site. Part of the foundation’s core mission is to encourage healthy choices and fuel a love of basketball for kids in Oklahoma. Previous court sites include parks, schools and recreation centers in Tulsa, Altus, Norman, Bethel Acres, El Reno, Moore and Oklahoma City.

ABOUT THE THUNDER CARES FOUNDATION: The Thunder Cares Foundation serves as the charitable arm of the Oklahoma City Thunder, raising and distributing funds to support the team’s community outreach programs. The Foundation has funded the refurbishment or building of 13 basketball courts throughout Oklahoma, including three courts outside Moore schools damaged or destroyed in the May 2013 tornado, as well as learning and activity rooms at the Oklahoma City Boys and Girls Club, the City Rescue Mission, SeeWorth Academy and Positive Tomorrows.
