Well Deserved Honor

20 Second Timeout

Bill Schoening - January 12, 2015

It's not everyday that you get recognized by the President of the United States, so Monday's ceremony in the East Room at the White House was pretty special. While openly admitting he is a diehard Bulls fan, President Barrack Obama said the Spurs are a difficult team to dislike. He cited many reasons, including their ability to bounce back from a difficult loss in the 2013 Finals, their international flavor (he called the Spurs the United Nations of basketball teams) and the fact they are still winning with "older" players. The President also kidded Head Coach Gregg Popovich about his "one word answers" to questions directed at him during in game television interviews, and told the team he would be available to advise them on how to win "back to back". My favorite part of the ceremony is when he singled out Matt Bonner as a "Sandwich Blogger whose nickname is the Red Mamba". All in all, it was a pretty cool experience for the players and coaches, and for those of us lucky enough to be invited.
