Bulls and Heat All-Stars go their own ways

Sam Smith: Can the Bulls serious, economical approach prevail over Miami’s flair and self indulgence? LeBron James had 36 points and seven dunks, including several powerful rim shakers, and Dwyane Wade had a triple double, just the third in All-Star history after James and Michael Jordan.

But both James and Wade made crucial turnovers in the last 1:19 when the East had a chance to tie or take the lead. Both Derrick Rose and Luol Deng sat out the fourth quarter, preferring to concentrate on the games that matter. James and Wade danced onto the stage in the pregame introductions, while Rose walked on respectfully and Deng proudly displayed a t-shirt with a picture of Africa.

Rose’s fairy tale continues with the NBA All-Star Game

Sam Smith: The magic slipper will be orange, Florida orange as it were, the color of the Adidas sneakers Derrick Rose will wear to start for the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-Star Game.

One of the most enduring tales in literature is the story of the unfortunate but pious and dutiful child who remains humble and virtuous amidst the greed and selfishness and then is rewarded, as it happens the symbol being the glass slipper — or sneaker if modernized — that fits and brings unimagined rewards.

And so perhaps it’s the Derrick Rose story as well as talk circulated at the All-Star game, confirmed later by Rose after initial reports by Comcast SportsNet, that Adidas and Rose completed a massive “lifetime” sneaker contract worth more than $200 million.

Rose riffs on MVP, Thibs and Noah’s couch

Sam Smith: To Bulls fans, Derrick Rose appears to be a super hero. So what if he were really a super hero? What would be his power? “I’d want to be invisible,” said Rose.

His sneaker company might not think was too good an idea. But that’s what it was like as the NBA All-Stars, with Bulls representatives Rose, Luol Deng and coach Tom Thibodeau, sitting close to one another, fielded inquiries in anticipation of Sunday’s game... continue reading.

The Bulls’ Magnificent Seven heads for Orlando

Sam Smith: The NBA’s annual midseason gala is going to have a distinct Bulls tint with Derrick Rose among the Eastern Conference starters, Luol Deng in his first All-Star appearance an Eastern Conference reserve, and Tom Thibodeau coaching the East team.

Joining Thibodeau will be his staff of assistant coaches, Ron Adams, Adrian Griffin, Mike Wilhelm, Ed Pinckney, Rick Brunson and Andy Greer. Although Rose, Deng and Thibodeau are the Bulls’ stars of the weekend, the generally anonymous staff also symbolizes the makeup of this Bulls team... continue reading.
