Chicago Bulls Celebrate Lunar New Year

February 22 game to feature gameday art designed by Don C in collaboration with AAPI students, performances from Yini Sun and the Elivy Dance and Modeling Group

The Bulls celebrate Lunar New Year, honoring the vibrant history of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) through community initiatives and fan experiences.

“Through our Lunar New Year celebrations, we will showcase the diverse talent, creativity and art of the AAPI community in Chicago,” said Michelle McComas, executive director of entertainment and events at the Chicago Bulls. “Inspired by the year of the Dragon, which symbolizes good luck, protection, intelligence and yang energy, we designed the game experience to honor the history and culture of the AAPI community. From our in-game performers to the featured artwork from the student at Haines Elementary, there will be plenty of opportunities to celebrate.”

Connecting with Community

Throughout the 2023-24 season, the Bulls and Don C partnered with Haines Elementary School, located in Chinatown. Through a four-month program, 15 students spent time with Don C, learning about the traditions and history of Lunar New Year and designing vision boards. These materials served as the inspiration for Don C to create gameday art for the Feb. 22 game. The art will be posted to Bulls social channels, seen throughout the United Center and included on the Item of the Game for Feb. 22 – a Lunar New Year-inspired t-shirt. Together, the Bulls and Don C also organized a tour for these students with Dilla the Urban Historian of Asian neighborhoods on the northside of the Chicago.

In-Game Experiences

The Lunar New Year game on Feb. 22 against the Boston Celtics will feature Concertmaster of the Jade Chinese Ensemble Yini Sun performing the National Anthem on the ehru, a traditional Chinese instrument, and a halftime performance from the Elivy Dance and Modeling Group featuring dynamic hip hop choreography, traditional Chinese dance and the artistry of puppetry.

Created by Tanjerine Studios’ Jean Elliott, the Luvabulls will wear a custom “QiPao” dress – crafted with traditional colors and symbols of Lunar New Year. The Luvabulls will also perform a traditional Chinese dance choreographed by Yin He Dance Company’s Managing and Artistic Director Angela Tam.

Fans can also visit the Atrium to learn more about the program with Haines Elementary and the meaning behind the final artwork design.

Year-Round Commitment

Over the past three seasons, the Bulls have made significant efforts to celebrate and honor AAPI heritage in Chicago with specially curated programs centered around the celebration of Lunar New Year. A common misconception surrounding Lunar New Year is that it is a holiday only celebrated by the Chinese community. To acknowledge this misconception, the Bulls work to curate organized programs that embrace this festive occasion and pay tribute to different AAPI cultures, ensuring expanded recognition this month and year-round. The Bulls remain committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity throughout the city.
