March 13th Game Recap: Wizards vs. Mavericks

Mavericks Bring Down Wizards

Another night the Wizards fought hard, but another night they came up short, as the Dallas Mavericks took down the Washington Wizards, 107-98, at American Airlines Arena on Tuesday night.

The Wizards made a nice third-quarter run, and were able to cut the Mavs lead down to two, but the defending champions showed why they are still one of the better teams in the league and took over in the fourth quarter.

Trevor Booker had one of his better games of the season as he led the team in both points and rebounds, with 20 and 12 respectively.

John Wall had himself another double-double, scoring 18 points and handing out 10 assists.

Nick Young and Jordan Crawford each had 15 points in the effort.

Next, the Wizards travel to New Orleans where they will take on the Hornets on Thursday night.

On the Wizards effort tonight

“I think we competed tonight, we just gave up too many easy baskets at times and turned the ball over. Yes, it was tough, but I think we competed from the first quarter to the fourth quarter, this time. Going into halftime they got a big run going, and when we got back close, they got another big run going, so we just got to figure out how to close it”

On what he can learn from playing against Jason Kidd and Tony Parker on consecutive nights
“Just to see how slow and passive they are, they take their time and get whatever they want whenever they want. They know how to run a ballclub really well.”

On the Mavericks’ defense
“I think when they went to the zone, that really hurt us. We didn’t know what to run at times and they did a great job of stopping us, and it took us until late into the fourth quarter to figure out how to pick it apart. It was too late then, they had a big lead.”

On the game
“We came in here and I thought we fought them tooth and nail. Against good teams like this your margin for error for us, being what we are as a young team, is small. We got to the line 38 times, but we left 12 of them at the line. Three-point shooting we couldn’t have done – 2 for 12. They beat us on the boards by [13]. But, we’ve just got to keep fighting like that, and keep improving. Making steps in the improvement defensively we need to make.”

On offensive rhythm
“Yeah, we struggled a bit both in the first half for a stretch, and then in the second with making shots. As long as we work to get good shots I don’t mind that. You’re going to have nights like that. But, we kept fighting, and we didn’t settle; when we weren’t making shots we got to the rim, and that shows in our 38 free throw attempts.”

On Mavericks guards
“Their guards are good. Obviously Terry has been that spark for them for a number of years now coming in off the bench. And Beaubois gave them a big lift tonight, I thought, to come in off the bench with 19 [points]. That was a big thing that hurt us.”
