Hornets Give Back During Season of Giving

December 12, 2011

The Hornets announced today that their annual Season of Giving initiative, which includes a series of community events, projects, and giveaways, will take place throughout the rest of the month of December and will provide thousands of local families with holiday cheer.

“The holidays are a time to give and give thanks, and we are blessed to be in a position where we have the resources and means to make a difference in the lives of those around us,” said Hornets President Hugh Weber. “While we are committed to giving back throughout the entire year, it is especially important to our entire Hornets family to show our support for the community during this time of family, fun and celebration.”

To tip-off the Season of Giving, the Hornets will partner with BP to dedicate a court in Grand Isle, La. at Cheniere Playground. The dedication marks the eighth court that the Hornets and BP have refurbished together.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the entire Hornets staff will serve lunch to more than 1,000 senior citizens during the team’s annual Health & Fitness Senior Luncheon at 11 a.m. at the Alario Center. These “young-at-heart” guests will learn about the importance of fitness and nutrition in their everyday lives, as well as be entertained by the Used to Bees, Honeybees, Hugo, caroling, giveaways and enjoy a warm holiday meal courtesy of Mr. Mudbug.

The Hornets have teamed up with Enterprise to donate 100 bikes to local children from organizations like HANO (Housing Authority of New Orleans), an non-profit committed to providing safe housing for families, and from Dryades YMCA. The bikes will be presented to the children at various events during the holiday season, including the Hornets open scrimmage on Dec. 17 and their home preseason game vs. Memphis on Dec. 21.

On Tuesday, Dec. 20, the Hornets will host The Salvation Army Emerge Christmas Party presented by Richard’s Disposal from 6-8 p.m. at Mardi Gras World. More than 700 Recovery School District 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders who have maintained perfect attendance will be invited to bring three guests for a party that features Hornets players, entertainment and gifts for everyone.

The Hornets will conclude their Season of Giving on Thursday, Dec. 22, when staff members and season ticket holders volunteer to beautify a local Boys and Girls Club facility by painting walls and doors, repairing equipment, cleaning and organizing and complete other various projects. The day will include a basketball game, coached by Hornets personalities, as well as a dance clinic taught by the Honeybees.
