5 Most Valuable Players at 2016 Orlando Summer League

Glenn Robinson III, Indiana Pacers Robinson quietly had one of the more impressive summer league performances. He averaged 15.6 points (shot 49 percent from field and 38 percent from 3-point range) and 5.6 rebounds. The son of the former NBA All-Star, Robinson played in 45 games last season for the Pacers and averaged 3.8 points. It was noticeable that he was one of the most experienced guys competing this week. He looked poised and confident throughout. Most striking about Robinson is how good he is moving with the ball in either direction (ambidextrous scorer). He has a ton of athleticism and agility and he excels in transition.
thumbnail-image: Josh Richardson, Miami Heat It’s surprising to see that he only shot 27 percent from 3-point range in the three games he played in, but J-Rich looks like he is on his way to earning an advanced role with the Heat. Especially with Dwyane Wade now with the Bulls, Richardson is expected to get more playing time in Miami next season. At summer league, he recorded good stats (16.7 points, 4.7 assists and only five total turnovers). Even though he wasn’t automatic from beyond the arc this week, Richardson’s terrific shooting mechanics and range makes him one of the league’s outstanding long distance shooters.
thumbnail-image: Cameron Payne, OKC Thunder Though he didn’t shoot a terrific percentage (43 percent from field, 28 percent from 3-point range), Payne had a solid summer league. He averaged 18.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals in four games. Payne has clearly added some strength (says he put on eight pounds since conference finals ended), which has allowed him to handle contact at the rim (attempted 26 free throws). Payne is very crafty and is very attentive to details. He has a smooth floater and teardrop and he is a capable perimeter shooter.
thumbnail-image: Stanley Johnson, Detroit Pistons The box score was never the focus for Johnson at summer league this week. He set out to improve his flaws (perimeter jump shot, playmaking and left-handed dribble and drives). With that said, Johnson still managed to post impressive numbers (16.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.2 steals). He also buried a few clutch shots and dished out some critical assists during the competition. While physicality and defensive toughness will continue to be his main strength, Johnson showed flashes at summer league of becoming a more complete offensive player.
thumbnail-image: Arinze Onuaku, Orlando Magic White At least four or five of the Orlando Magic White’s players deserve to be mentioned on this list. Treveon Graham (16.0 points, versatile scorer), Justin Dentmon (game-winning 3-pointer in championship game), Patricio Garino (38 percent from 3-point range) and Alex Davis (stifling defender) all had fantastic weeks. But, Onuaku was the force inside that seemed to wear down opponents. He nearly averaged a double-double (14.8 points, 9.8 rebounds) and he was tremendous protecting the paint. Onuaku has bounced around the league the last few years (stints with Pelicans, Cavaliers and Timberwolves). He also has spent time in the D-League and overseas. Perhaps this is the year he gets a more sustained role with an NBA club.
