Despite a career night from Byron Mullens with 21 points, the Bobcats (2-9) losing streak reached five games as they lost to the Hawks (8-4), 111-81, in Atlanta to start their only back-to-back-to-back set of the season.
The Bobcats battled the Hawks in the first quarter and entered the second trailing, 25-21… Tyrus Thomas (seven points) and Byron Mullens (six points) combined for 13 points in the frame, but Thomas was held in check the rest of the way due to second-half foul trouble and finished with nine points… Atlanta extended the lead to 57-47 at halftime and broke the game open in the third, outscoring Charlotte, 28-19… Josh Smith (30 points) and Joe Johnson (23 points) stepped their games up in the absence of Al Horford (torn pectoral muscle), as the two combined for 53 points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The most telling statistic was the way the Bobcats got dominated on the boards by the Hawks. Charlotte was nearly doubled up on the boards as Atlanta outrebounded them, 55-30, including 20-4 on the offensive glass... The Bobcats shot 42.3 percent (33 of 78) from the field, while the Knicks shot 46.7 percent (42-90)... Charlotte was unable to get anything going from the 3-point line as they shot just 12.5 percent (1 of 8), compared to the Hawks 31.6 percent (6 of 19).
BOBCATS PLAYER OF THE GAME
Byron Mullens scored a career-high 21 points and added four rebounds in his first start for the Bobcats.
BOBCATS TOP RESERVE
Derrick Brown had six points, two rebounds and two assists on a relatively quiet night from the bench.
HAWKS PLAYER OF THE GAME
Josh Smith had a huge night, leading Atlanta with 30 points and 13 rebounds and was a big reason that the Hawks were able to build the early lead they would not relinquish.
INSIDE THE LOCKER ROOM
"They just beat us down tonight. They almost got as many offensive rebounds as we had total rebounds tonight. That’s difficult to accept. We have to learn from our losses. It doesn’t seem as if that’s happening. We just have to turn things around. I was pleased with some of our bench play. Corey Higgins played well tonight and with a lot of energy."
-Bobcats Head Coach Paul Silas
"That loss was too bad for me to keep my head up about how I played. I’m just going to watch some film tonight and try to figure out what’s going on. We just have to get it together. No excuses."
-Bobcats Center Byron Mullens
Byron Mullens and Gerald Henderson (16 points, four rebounds and two assists), were the only two players for the Bobcats to reach double figures in scoring… Tyrus Thomas was back in the starting lineup after missing Tuesday’s game against Houston with a sore ankle and finished with nine points and three blocks in 26 minutes… Cory Higgins had his best game as a Bobcat with six points, two rebounds and an assist in 13 minutes... Corey Maggette (hamstring), Eduardo Najera (knee) and Reggie Williams (knee) all were inactive due to injuries.
The Bobcats return home to Time Warner Cable Arena® on Friday to play the Detroit Pistons at 7 p.m. Catch all the action on SportSouth, listen to us on WFNZ and join the live chat on bobcats.com.
