Charlotte Hornets and Food Lion Feeds Partner for Unique Food Drive

March 2, 2015 – The Charlotte Hornets and Food Lion Feeds today announced the launch of the 2015 Food Lion Feeds Food Drive campaign, a five-week food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. On March 2, volunteers from the Hornets, Food Lion and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina will build a structure made of donated Food Lion branded food cans and boxes. The structure includes a playground and basketball court and was designed by Odell architecture firm. It will be located at the Trade Street plaza entrance just outside of the Hornets Fan Shop and will remain standing through April 4.

“Along with our great partners at Food Lion, we are excited to tackle an important issue facing our community today,” Hornets Sports & Entertainment President & COO Fred Whitfield said. “Hunger is a growing concern throughout the Carolinas and we are thrilled to facilitate the giving nature of the people of our community as we all do our part in eliminating this epidemic. Eliminating hunger remains one of the pillars of the Charlotte Hornets Foundation.”

At each home game, beginning with the March 3 matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers and ending with the April 4 game against the Philadelphia 76ers, fans are encouraged to bring a boxed, nonperishable food item to Time Warner Cable Arena. Fans that donate items will be offered an opportunity to enter a raffle to win four lower-level seats to the game on April 8 vs. the Toronto Raptors. Cash donations will also be accepted. By donating $3 towards the Food Drive, fans without a food item can also enter the raffle. All donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

"As the Official Hunger Relief Partner of the Charlotte Hornets, we are extremely grateful for the opportunity to help raise awareness about hunger in the Charlotte community through this food drive and in-arena exhibit," said Food Lion President Meg Ham. "We hope Hornets fans and Food Lion customers will join us in the fight against hunger in our home market and participate in donating food to help our neighbors in the Charlotte community who are struggling with hunger.”

“Second Harvest Food Bank is so grateful to have partners like the Charlotte Hornets and Food Lion that work with us to insure that every child, senior and working poor family in our region has enough to eat every single day,” said Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina Executive Director Kay Carter.  “We would encourage all of the Hornets fans to support this food drive and help us reach our goal of a community free from hunger.”
