MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART
NBA Cares Hoops for Troops is a year-round initiative led by the NBA, its teams and players in collaboration with the Department of Defense, USO and other military and veteran serving organizations to honor active and retired service men and women and their families.  As a part of the NBA Cares Hoops for Troops initiative, the Charlotte Hornets will partner with the Military Order of the Purple Heart at tonight’s game.  The Military Order of the Purple Heart is an all veteran service organization comprised entirely of combat veterans who were wounded on the world’s battlefields while serving our country in uniform.  For their service and sacrifice they were honored with the Purple Heart medal, which is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the United States Armed Services after April 5, 1917, has been wounded or killed.

During a special halftime presentation at tonight’s game, the Charlotte Hornets will honor the Military Order of the Purple Heart and 12 Purple Heart recipients.  Hornets Sports & Entertainment President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield and Executive Vice President of Operations and former Command Sergeant Major James Jordan will also accept recognition as the first NBA Purple Heart Team on behalf of the organization.

Around Veterans Day (November 4 - 11), NBA players will wear special on-court apparel, including adidas shooting shirts, headbands, wristbands and socks to commemorate the holiday.
