ERIK SPOELSTRA
ASSISTANT COACH/DIRECTOR OF SCOUTING


Erik Spoelstra enters his 13th season with the Miami HEAT coaching staff and his seventh in the role of Assistant Coach/Director of Scouting. Spoelstra, who previously served as Assistant Coach/Advance Scout for two seasons (1999-01), has the primary role in developing game plans for upcoming opponents. To that end, he coordinates the video staff and advance scout Chad Kammerer and oversees the development of scouting reports and videos. In addition, he is in charge of the HEAT’s Individual Player Development Program. He has also been the head coach of the HEAT’s summer league squad the last three summers.

Spoelstra spent his first two seasons (1995-97) with the HEAT as the team’s Video Coordinator in charge of preparing scouting tapes and heading the information technology department for the coaching staff. He was the team’s Assistant Coach/Video Coordinator for the next two seasons (1997-99).

After college, Spoelstra spent two seasons as a player/coach for Tus Herten, a team in the professional sports league of Germany. He attended the University of Portland where he was
the starting point guard for four years and was named the West
Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. Spoelstra graduated
from Portland in 1992 with a degree in communications.

Spoelstra is the son of Jon Spoelstra, a long-time NBA executive who has guided the Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets. His grandfather, Watson, was a Detroit Tigers beat writer for many years.

A native of Portland, Spoelstra now resides in Miami.
