Up on the stage at the&nbsp;McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Hawks General Manager Landry Fields watched as NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum revealed the draft order by opening envelopes in reverse order from the No. 14 pick to the No. 1 pick&nbsp;

"Once the 10th pick was shown, I knew we had launched into the top four," Fields said afterward, "so everything kind of swirls through your head at that point in time, and you're like, 'OK, we actually have a crack at this thing,'&nbsp;and lo and behold, here we are."

Tatum opened envelopes revealing the Spurs, Rockets, and Wizards as the recipients of picks No. 4, 3, and 2, respectively.

The Hawks had won the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery and now hold the rights to the No. 1 pick when&nbsp;the&nbsp;NBA Draft begins on June 26.

Moments earlier, in the room backstage where the ping-pong balls were randomly tossed and selected, Hawks Vice President of Player Personnel Daniel Starkman watched with representatives of the other 13 teams as picks No. 1 through No. 14 were determined in forward order. Byron Spruell, President of League Operations for the NBA, announced the procedural rules. Balls numbered from 1 to 14 went into the machine, and the first ones to come out were the ones to determine the holder of the No. 1 overall pick.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hawks only held 30 of the 1000 unordered combinations for a 3.0 percent chance of winning. 6-10-13-14 was one of them.

After the envelopes were opened, Starkman came out from where he was sequestered&nbsp;to celebrate with Fields.

"He came out and gave me the ping pong balls and everything," Fields said. "He had the world's largest smile on his face, and we had a really nice moment there in front of the stage together."

Fields said that draft preparations began long before Sunday's lottery, and the only thing that has changed is the opportunity gained in picking before any of the other 29 teams.

"Our process for choosing players and bringing them into the building has already begun," he said. "We've been doing it. Our scouts have been extremely hard at work. People have been on the road, I've been on the road. We're prepared for this moment."

Then he added, "We'll get together as a group and continuously beat this thing up every which way to make sure that we're doing right and what's best for the Atlanta Hawks."

Prior to Sunday, the NBA's 40th Lottery, the Hawks had been through the lottery process 14 times. They had never won, finishing 3rd just once in 2007.&nbsp;

Now they have one win, and they also have one excellent chance to add a foundational piece for their future.&nbsp;

"It's an exciting day for the Hawks," Fields said. "It's so good for our franchise. It's exciting for us."

Second Time in Franchise History Hawks Own First Overall Pick in Draft

ATLANTA&nbsp;– The Atlanta Hawks secured the first overall pick at the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery, which was conducted earlier today in Chicago. The first pick in this year’s draft is Atlanta’s own.

Entering today’s lottery, the Hawks held a 3% chance of receiving the top overall pick in this year’s draft. It’s just the second time in Atlanta history the club owns the first overall pick, as the Hawks selected David Thompson with the first pick in the 1975 NBA Draft.

The 2024 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm, will mark the 78th&nbsp;year of the event. New this year, the NBA Draft will expand to a two-night format. The first round will take place on Wednesday, June 26 at the Barclays Center, while the second round will take place at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios on Thursday, June 27.&nbsp;The first round will continue to have five minutes between draft picks and the second round will increase to four minutes from two minutes.

ABC, ESPN and the ESPN App will each air the first round, and ESPN and the ESPN App will broadcast the second round. Coverage on both nights will begin at 8 p.m. ET. ESPN Radio will also provide national coverage of the NBA Draft.

After the NBA broke ties for the 2018 Draft today, the Hawks now know the draft slots for 3 of their 4 picks as well as their odds of winning the Draft Lottery. 

The Hawks lost a draft tie with the Dallas Mavericks that was broken today. As a result, the Mavericks will get one extra combination (out of 1000) in the Draft Lottery to be held May 15, plus the right to pick before the Hawks if neither team wins a top-3 pick in the Lottery. With the one extra winning combination, the Mavericks have a 42.5 percent chance of winning a top-3 pick, while the Hawks have a 42.4 percent chance. The lowest the Hawks can fall in the lottery is the seventh pick. 

The biggest mathematical change due the tiebreaker outcome is that a #6 pick is now more likely and a #4 pick is less likely, as shown below.

Here are the likelihoods of the Hawks nabbing each of the first seven picks:

2nd: 14.2 percent3rd: 14.5 percent 4th: 8.5 percent 5th: 32.3 percent 6th: 15.5 percent 7th: 1.3 percentThe plus side of losing the tie-break scenario is that the default draft order is reversed for the second round, so the Hawks will get the #33 overall pick (the third pick of the second round) and the Mavericks will get the #34 pick. The Hawks also have the rights to a first-roundpick – #30 overall – that they acquired in a 2017 trade with Houston.In a separate tiebreaker between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the San Antonio Spurs, the Spurs won, earning them the #18 pick in the Draft. The #19 pick will convey from Minnesota to the Hawks as a result of a 2015 trade that sent Adreian Payne to the Timberwolves. If any Hawks fans are disappointed about getting the #19 pick, here's one important fact to keep in mind: the Hawks also had the #19 draft pick in the 2017 Draft and they used it to select John Collins. In a deep 2018 Draft, it is quite likely that the Hawks find another gem or two (or three) with the #19, #30 and #33 picks.

What Does The Hawks Draft Look Like After Tiebreakers?

The Hawks will know a great deal more about their four picks in the 2018 NBA Draft when the NBA breaks its ties Friday afternoon.

The Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks finished with identical 24-58 records. Only Phoenix (21-61) and Memphis (22-60) earned fewer wins, so the Hawks and Mavericks tied for the third-worst record. The NBA will break the tie Friday.The team that wins gets the #3 pre-lottery spot: 138 combinations out of 1,000 in the lottery and a 13.8 percent chance at the #1 overall pick. The team that loses gets 137 combinations out of 1,000 and a 13.7% percent chance to get #1 pick. In terms of their chances at getting a top-3 pick, Atlanta and Dallas will have nearly identical odds regardless of who wins the tiebreaker.  But the tiebreaker still impacts the order for the draft in two key ways. 1) The Default Ordering (if neither team wins a top-3 pick) The tiebreaker determines the default ordering of the teams. The NBA lottery uses weighted odds to randomly select the ordering for the top three picks. Beyond the top three picks, however, the order is dictated by reverse-order of the standings – but the Hawks and Mavericks are tied at 24 wins. If neither the Hawks nor the Mavericks get a top-3 pick, then the winner of the tiebreak is guaranteed to finish with a lottery pick just in front of the loser of the tiebreak.  The winner of the tiebreaker and holder of the #3 pre-lottery spot is guaranteed to have a pick no worse than 6th. The loser of the tiebreaker and holder of the #4 pre-lottery spot is guaranteed to have a pick no worse than 7th. Moreover, the winner is significantly more likely to get the #4 (23.8 percent chance) pick than the loser (8.5 percent), who, in turn, is much more likely than the winner to end up 6th.[[{"fid":"119273","view_mode":"default","fields":{"format":"default","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"graph","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"type":"media","attributes":{"alt":"graph","height":"392","width":"635","class":"media-element file-default"}}]]
