ATLANTA -- Atlanta Hawks radio play-by-play announcer Steve Holman will call his 2,000th consecutive game (regular season and playoffs) when the Hawks “do basketball battle” with the Brooklyn Nets at Philips Arena on Jan. 16 (7:30 p.m. tipoff).
Helping commemorate the evening will be a special on-court ceremony with the “Voice of the Hawks” during a first quarter timeout, among other festivities.
Holman’s consecutive game streak, which is the longest active of any NBA announcer in radio or television, began in March of 1989. His most recent milestone, consecutive game no. 1,500 came on March 5, 2007, his 53rd birthday.
His signature “basketball battle” introduction to broadcasts pays homage to his mentor, famed Celtics broadcaster, the late Johnny Most.
A 2011 Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inductee, Holman is in his 28th year behind the microphone for the Hawks and has announced games around the globe, including contests in Russia, England, Puerto Rico and Canada, and has been a part of several historic calls, including Dominique Wilkins becoming the Hawks’ all-time leading scorer and Lenny Wilkens’ record-breaking 939th career win.
