Player Notes

Sam Young

has reached double figures in six of the last seven games after doing so just five times in his first 42 games, matching a career high with 22 points tonight… Memphis had won each of the last five games when Young scored 10-plus prior to tonight’s loss… Tonight marks the second time this season that Young led the Grizzlies in scoring.

On Sam Young:
Sam’s played well since he’s been in the starting lineup. He got out of control a little bit at times tonight, but I had no problem with Sam’s game. I told Sam that he was going to get a lot of shots because Kobe (Bryant) was going to play off of him. He played off of Tony (Allen). He had better success when Tony was in the game, but Sam got a lot of looks. That’s just the way they play. You have to expect it. Normally you have somebody else out there. O.J. (Mayo) would have been out there a lot of the times, which means Kobe has to play a lot more on us. Now Zach (Randolph) gets more touches. There were times when we would try to go into the post and Kobe just stood next to Zach while the big guy played behind him. They dared us to throw it across to Tony for the shot because they knew he couldn’t come to the basket with all that length in there. You have to make shots. That’s why, in this business, you can never have too many shooters.

On seeing more double-teams:
“Whenever you see a double-team, whoever’s getting double-teamed has to know that they’re coming and you have to get the ball as quick as possible to get it to the other side. We did a poor job executing out of the post and out of those double-teams. We didn’t do a great job moving the ball. Then we turned it over a couple times down the stretch when it was important to keep the possession.
