Grizzlies team physician honored

MEMPHIS, June 26, 2012 — The Memphis Grizzlies announced that team doctor and Campbell Clinic Chief of Staff Frederick M. Azar, MD was voted Physician of the Year by the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association (NBATA) during the association’s recent meeting in Chicago. The award is given out annually to a physician who is recognized by the NBATA for outstanding service and care. Dr. Azar will receive the award in Memphis when the Dallas Mavericks play the Memphis Grizzlies next season.

Dr. Azar has been the head team physician for the Memphis Grizzlies since the team came to the Bluff City in 2001. In the 11 years he has served as the team’s orthopedic physician, Azar has successfully managed the rehabilitation of multiple player injuries. He has remained integral in every step of the rehab process, for both injuries requiring surgery and those calling for physical therapy. Azar remains the team’s point of contact for other NBA teams soliciting second opinions on injuries and facilitating visiting teams’ orthopedic needs, while he also spearheaded the Hoops for St. Jude efforts for team physicians around the league.

He is a sports medicine physician and orthopedic surgeon at Campbell Clinic and is also a professor and director of the sports medicine fellowship program at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He also serves as team physician for several other area sports teams, both professional and college.
