They said...

Coach Hollins

On how they got the win:

“Our defense. It was overwhelming in the third quarter. It was just outstanding. We held them to 14 points. We scored 33 on a lot of transition buckets. We just came out with a mindset that was committed to playing defense. In the first half, we played a little bit here and a little bit there but we were stagnant on offense. In the second half, we came out and our defense energized our offense. We had 23 deflections. We had 12 three-times-in-a-row-stops and we had two charges. They shot 33 percent in the second half after shooting 47 percent in the first half. (Linas) Kleiza had 11 points, and he didn’t score in the second half. We just did an outstanding job all around. We did a nice job on (DeMar) DeRozan for the game. We did a nice job on Kyle Lowry, though he is just on his second or third game coming back after being out with his ankle, but I thought we kept him out of the paint pretty decent.”

On Marreese Speights:

“I thought that Speights’ night started yesterday at practice. He had one of the best practices. He practiced hard, full speed, the whole time. I told him tonight, ‘That is what gets you started.’ You can’t loaf around and say you are going to do it in a game. I was amazed at how the whole team practiced yesterday. We didn’t do a lot of contact, but there was a lot of effort and a lot of focus. That carried into the game for Speights. That is what all players have to do. They have to practice hard and then it shows up in the game.”

Marreese Speights

On the Grizzlies:

“It’s really fun knowing that we have Tony Allen and Marc Gasol and even Mike Conley stealing the ball, getting rebounds and getting down the court. We knew they had a tough night last night in Houston. Coach (Lionel Hollins) was mad at us at halftime because we had a bad attitude.”

Mike Conley

On the win:

I think we got ball inside and got it to Marc (Gasol) and Zach (Randolph) early. They really didn’t have an answer for us. We got stops defensively. Tony (Allen) really made some big plays for us. We got in transition. I think we were very, very good. I think that really changed us.”

On his flu symptoms and being unable to play Monday night:

“I’m feeling better. I was coughing a lot. I don’t have fever today. Hopefully it just keeps getting better. It was tough. I was at home watching the game and darn near drove back up to the Forum. It was tough to watch. I got mad at the guys. We just have to play better regardless from the beginning of the night. Hopefully we learned from that and it was a good experience for everybody.”

On the Grizzlies’ defense:

“It’s great. We know how to play defense. When we get one guy playing hard it gets contagious. We start turning balls over and get out in transition. It’s a highlight reel when you have Rudy (Gay) dunking, Tony (Allen) dunking and making plays. That’s the kind of basketball we love to play.”

Zach Randolph

On his play:

“I try to come out every night and be the same. I have the same focus mentally every night. I’ll crash the boards and rebound. I do the little stuff.”

On Friday’s game against Detroit:

“It’s important (to finish the home stand with a win). They’ve been playing well. They have a good team. We have to come out and play hard for 48 minutes and know what we’re playing for.”
