(On the difference between his team’s offense tonight compared to previous games): "First of all, we played with a lot more continuity than we have the last few games. We were moving the basketball more and even to get into situations where we want a player to attack and (LeBron James) comes off of some motion. It’s a lot more effective for our scorers to make a play. Second thing, honestly, we made shots and some of those were the same shots that we were missing in recent games. I’m talking about shots that were not easy shots. A lot of times off of movement, you catch and face and you have to shoot a two-pointer. That’s not an easy shot and we knocked a lot of those shots down today. We made a few more threes than we did last game, something that over the course of the season we did a better job at. We did make a few more and that was important because they were threes that were momentum threes that really helped us. Once we started rebounding the ball better, we played with much more pace. Chicago is so good defensively, you have to do that to get some easy looks and I think that was what looked better."

(On LeBron James and Kyrie Irving): "LeBron was just outstanding in every element of the game. You can’t pick a thing that he didn’t do at the highest level. I think I told you before the game that Kyrie has been gutting it out and today it seemed like he was feeling a little bit better. Obviously, he’s not 100 percent and you can see it. Together with his heart, his performance was very high-leveled as well and he took responsibility. He made big plays for us and we needed every one of them."

(On the intensity his team played with): "When you play in a series, and in particular in a series like this, you learn a lot about yourself. You learn a lot about your team, and you learn a lot about what’s important to win games because they’re not going to come easy. I just think that the guys recognize what they have to do and what they have to do together in order to be a very good basketball team. For me, that’s the thing. That’s something you can only do as a trial by fire. This is a hot series. Guys are learning and they’re doing a great job."

(On Tristan Thompson): "First of all, from the get-go, he’s a good basketball player. I don’t think he suddenly got to this point. I think we’ve been playing him in crunch time for a long time. He’s been in many, many, many closing situations and he’s giving us yeoman’s work every time he’s in there. He never steps away from that ever. That’s his identity and he lives it. Sometimes you notice it more, sometimes you notice it less but he’s in the fray all the time. He makes big plays that don’t necessarily show up as points but a lot of times they’re possessions that lead to points or they’re momentum rebounds or they’re defensive slides, helps, switches and blocks that can really, really save you and he’s done that continuously throughout the season.”

(On the confidence he has in Kyrie Irving): "What he did today, that’s what he’s been doing the whole season. That’s who he is. Albeit he’s not 100 percent but he was better. He felt better and he a little bit more lift and a little bit more energy and just overall a better feeling. The plays that he made at the rim and the shots that he made reflected that. A lot of times you can see in a jump shot when a guy is not right with legs and certainly you can see it on drives. I thought Kyrie, for the most part, his balance and lift were good. The way he finished was what we’ve seen from him quite some time.”

(On having zero turnovers): “Yay! First of all. No turnovers. That’s the first stat I always look at after the game. I just try to be efficient for my teammates. That was very efficient. As much as I was handling the ball tonight, myself and Kyrie, to not give the opposing team another possession, an extra possession, that’s a huge stat for myself. I never pat myself on the back ever, but I will now.”

(On not holding onto the ball as long and working the left block in the first half): “I think our coaching staff did a great job of putting me in positions where I could be successful. I just try to read and react. I try to play my game, be aggressive, maintain and get some shots going early. I feel pretty good. I was able to get my jumper on and I was able to get my post-up game and my attack game going pretty early. So I just try to feed off of it, just try to feed off the rhythm that I had and stay in the rhythm as long as I could.”

(On the Cavs’ growth as a team throughout the playoffs): “I think, like I always continue to say, every game is an experience for us. I think we grew some tonight and I also think we didn’t grow as much. We gave up 30 points in the fourth quarter, which I think is unacceptable. At one point, I think we were up 17 and we just kind of got into a trance defensively. We gave too many backdoor cuts. We gave a couple and-ones. We had a couple open threes in the fourth quarter. I think those are things that we will watch tomorrow and say, ‘OK. We can’t have these types of lulls defensively.’ We have a quarter like we did in Game 4 where we have a 12 point quarter defensively. We have a 16 point quarter defensively. We just locked in. When we’re locked in defensively, when everyone is in tune and we know this is how we’re going to be, then we’re great. When we’re not locked in – when one guy is off or two guys are off, it’s (like) a pick-six. He scores it’s a 3 point play (or) a layup. Those are things that as a young group, you know are going to happen, you just don’t want them to happen consistently. I think tonight, we did a great job of playing our game. But there are some things that we can still continue to get better with.”

(On Jimmy Butler being his shadow and getting early fouls): “It didn’t mean anything. I don’t mind him being my shadow. I don’t mind it at all. I take all competition. I love going against Jimmy, I think it brings out the best in myself. I try to reciprocate it back to him. Two fouls for Jimmy and he sits down. I felt like at the start of the game I was in a good groove anyways. It didn’t matter to me. Not tonight, not the way my approach of the game was, not the way I was feeling. Then he sat down for a little bit. He still ended up coming back earlier than we probably all expected and played the whole first half and didn’t get another foul to sit him back on the bench. It didn’t matter.”

(On the importance of Tristan Thompson in this series): “Tristan is unbelievable. Through five games, you give him an A+ in effort. It’s all effort with Double T. Can’t coach a motor. When a guy has a motor, you can’t coach it. If you put him on the floor, he’s going to make things happen. He has a knack for rebounding, he has a high motor and he actually really, really, really, really cares. He really cares about the game and about his teammates. When he makes mistakes he wants to know how can he get better the next time so it doesn’t happen again. Obviously we wouldn’t be sitting here with a 3-2 lead without Double T. It’s impossible. We wouldn’t be doing it.”

(On having more lift than expected with his injuries): “Going into the game, even this morning at shootaround, I felt a little bit better. Then I kept icing, kept getting treatment on it and came into the game still a little stiff. I think it was just more or less being in the right spots. There were some tough layups I was shooting, and I still had no lift on it, but I just remembered about the preparation that I’ve had since I was a kid – being able to know the angles and practicing the Mikan Drill, doing that for hours. Even if I don’t have any lift, just somehow I get it up to the rim and spin it the right way. I wouldn’t even call it a fastbreak, I still remember, me and Joakim (Noah) tonight, I went up there and somehow just put the ball at a certain angle. Physically, I still have to get better, but it’s just about being in the right spots and trying to be efficient for Bron and my teammates. I’m trying to take as much pressure off of him. Some of the looks that we give each other during the game, we’ve built this dynamic – of me and him, especially during the fourth quarter on the screen-and-rolls. I can’t necessarily push off and get around like I’m used to so I just commend him for putting this on his back and us feeding off of his energy and then his drives and him being ready to shoot every time he’s driving.”

(On the mental component of his last few days): “This has been the biggest mental challenge of my career thus far, just because I want to do more. I want to be that guy for my teammates as well as for Bron (LeBron). We’ve built a dynamic of me and him playing off one another extremely well and another guy spacing the floor. When we need a bucket, there’s me and Bron, and we take it upon ourselves to do that. When you can’t do that, when you’re limited to certain things, you have to come to grips with it. Games 3 and 4 were probably the biggest challenge for me to come to grips with, just because I want to do so much more. So it’s just about learning from different experiences, especially Games 3 and 4, watching a lot of film, getting a lot of treatment and putting myself in that mental space to be ready to play. Obviously I’m really confident still in myself. I just want to go out there and play for my brothers. That’s all that matters at this point.”

(On both team’s runs): “The execution. Thibs (Coach Thibodeau) is one of the best to do it, especially on the defensive end. He makes it tough for us. Fortunately, we have a pretty good player at 23, he helps us out a lot, bails us out. What I would say looks like a 60% Kyrie (Irving) is doing pretty well, as well. Shump (Iman Shumpert) is playing unbelievable, Double T (Tristan Thompson) is playing unbelievable so it’s a total team effort.

(On what he saw in Kyrie): “He was more aggressive, I think. Whenever he is aggressive, even though he’s hurt, he still puts a threat on the defense and makes it easier for everybody as well as him.”

(On failing to rebound LeBron James’ missed shot in the final seconds): “Big play. Big play. When you look at the game, it comes down to the rebound there (and) the open shot. I like the fight that we had to come back. The second quarter was a big problem for us. Jimmy (Butler) getting in foul trouble hurt us. The guys coming in have got to get it done. We’ve got to play a lot tougher than we did tonight.”

(On LeBron tonight): “Look, the guy’s a great player. I’ve said this before, you can defend a great player very well and he can still make (shots). I thought we were a step late with our help today. We’ve got to look at that and see how we can correct it. But he’s a great player. We’ve got to challenge shots and try to make him work. I thought Kyrie (Irving) hurt us. We’ve got to get that straightened out and we’ve got to play for 48 minutes. The second quarter was a big problem.”

(On whether he’s surprised by Kyrie’s play tonight): “No. I’ve said this before. In this league, great players always have the ability to play great no matter what ailments they have. You can never let your guard down against them. You see it all the time. A guy is nicked up and hurt, goes out there and has a huge night. That’s what makes them great. So it doesn’t surprise me. Obviously, we’ve got to do a lot better than we did.”

(On Chicago’s strong first and third quarters, and what went wrong in between): “That was our goal coming in, to get off to a good start. We did that. They finished with a flurry in the first and took a lead. Again, we had one of those stretches in the second quarter like we did in Game 4 in the second quarter that probably cost us a little bit. We go through a little bit of these lulls and they just seem to do us in a little. Last game we had two stretches like that. This game, I thought we had one. Hopefully next game, we’ll eliminate them and have none.”

(On the Bulls’ offense without Pau Gasol): “Obviously, we miss him. He does so much for us. He can get down there in the low block and score. He can make jump shots. He can facilitate. But we’ve got a stable of good players that we feel like are fully capable of picking up the slack. Obviously, it hasn’t shown in the win column. But we don’t know his status or availability for Game 6, so we’ll be ready to go again and we believe we can win.”

(On whether he was surprised at Jimmy Butler’s effectiveness guarding LeBron despite foul trouble): “Nothing surprises me with Jimmy. You get two fouls early, and unfortunately with one of them they had their feet tangled, and Jimmy had to go out of the game. LeBron was off to a good start as it is, and then (Butler) comes in and can’t be as aggressive because (he’s) got those two fouls. So Jimmy was playing a little less hands and more body. That’s a tough dude to handle. He had a great game tonight. We’ve done a decent job on him throughout the series. Jimmy has really battled and made him take a lot of tough shots with low percentages. But tonight, the percentages came back in his favor.”

(On Derrick Rose’s shooting night): “I thought he had some really good looks, especially right at the basket, that he just missed. He’s playing really well right now. He’s attacking. He��s confident. 24 looks for him – we’ll take that. We like Derrick’s shooting. We feel good. Everyone’s a little bit banged up right now, but that’s the playoffs. It goes both ways and we’ll be ready for Game 6.”

Wrap-Up – For a moment there in the fourth quarter, it looked like the Cavaliers just might cruise to a Game 5 victory. But anyone who’s watched a minute of this Second Round series should know that nothing is going to come easy for either team.

After trailing early, the Cavaliers took control in the second quarter and extended their advantage to as many as 17 early in the fourth. But following Taj Gibson’s ejection, the Bulls mounted a furious comeback that got Chicago to within a deuce with just over a minute to go. But a huge offensive rebound by Iman Shumpert and some clutch free throw shooting in the closing moments sealed the 106-101 win on Tuesday night at The Q.

The series now shifts to Chicago, where the two battered combatants will face off in Game 6 on Thursday night. A Bulls win sends the Conference Semis back to Cleveland for a Game 7 on Sunday. A Cavaliers win sends the Wine and Gold to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2009.

Right from the opening tip, LeBron James put the Cavaliers on his sizeable shoulders. And the four-time MVP showed why he’s still considered the game’s greatest player – going off for a game-high 38 points on 14-of-24 shooting, adding team-highs in rebounds (12), assists (6), steals (3) and tying Shumpert for the team-lead in blocks (3). In 41 minutes of heavy action, LeBron didn’t commit a single turnover.

Kyrie Irving turned in one of the most courageous performances of his young career. Playing on one good leg – (maybe) – Irving bounced back from a pair of tough outings to follow up with 25 points, going 9-for-16 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Irving was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the third, notching nine points to help Cleveland extend its second-half edge.

Iman Shumpert finished with 13 points, seven boards and three blocked shots. Four of Shump’s seven rebounds came off the offensive glass – including the biggest board of the game.

With Cleveland protecting a two-point lead, a hot-potato carom with 20 seconds to play off a LeBron miss found several players’ outstretched arms before Shump snagged the loose ball and dealt it back to Kyrie, who was subsequently fouled – sinking both free throws to give Cleveland a two-possession lead.

Tristan Thompson doubled-up for the second time in his last three starts – finishing with 12 points and 10 boards, four of those coming off the offensive glass.  In his third straight game coming off the bench, J.R. Smith finished with a dozen points of his own – going 5-for-11 from the floor, including 2-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Matthew Dellavedova had a nice outing on both ends of the floor, but it was the skirmish with Taj Gibson that turned the game on its edge.

With 10:25 remaining in the ballgame, Gibson and Delly battled for a rebound off an Aaron Brooks’ floater. Gibson knocked Dellavedova to the ground and their legs tangled up for a moment. When Gibson got to his feet, he kicked Delly’s legs – prompting both teams into the fray. Gibson was issued a Flagrant-2 and shown the door as Delly split the free throws to give Cleveland a 12-point bulge.

Six players notched double-figures for the Bulls, who were led by Jimmy Butler’s 29 points. For the second straight game, Chicago’s All-Star center, Pau Gasol, missed the game with a sore left hamstring.

The Cavaliers shot 51 percent from the floor to the Bulls’ 40 percent. The Cavaliers came into Game 5 leading all remaining playoff teams in blocked shots at 7.0 per game and only improved on that number on Tuesday – swatting 12 Chicago offerings’ in the victory.

Once again – as it’s been in every game of the series – the team that won the rebounding edge won the game. On Tuesday, the Wine and Gold out-rebounded the Bulls, 41-40.

Turning Point – The Bulls jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, but the Cavs held them to just 4-for-22 shooting in the second. The Cavs shot 56 percent themselves in the third and were well on their way to icing the win in the fourth.

But not long after the fracas between Delly and Taj Gibson, the Bulls found new life – and proceeded to go on a 15-5 run that cut Cleveland’s lead to just four – 97-93 – with just over four minutes to play. The Cavs pushed their lead back to eight, but Jimmy Butler hit back-to-back treys that got the Bulls to within two points.

But at that point, the Wine and Gold locked down for the win – with LeBron chasing down and swatting Derrick Rose’s layup attempt with 48.8 to play and Iman Shumpert snagging a critical rebound less than 30 second s later.

By the Numbers – 3 … players in NBA history – now including LeBron James – who have tallied at least 35 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks in a playoff game, joining Dwyane Wade – who did it in the Finals in 2006 – and Elvin Hayes – who accomplished the feat against the Buffalo Braves in 1975. The difference between LeBron and the other two? James recorded that stat line while placing a donut in the turnover column.

After the heart-stopping closing moments in Games 3 and 4 at the United Center, there’s no telling what these two teams will do for an encore on Tuesday night at The Q.

Through four games, the only lopsided affair was Game 2 – with Games 3 and 4 being decided by a pair of MVPs at the buzzer. If the series stretches to seven games, it’s a best-of-three with two of three on Cleveland’s home floor, where the Wine and Gold have won 23 of their last 25 – including three of four from the Bulls this season. During the regular season, the Cavs were undefeated when they scored 100 points (22-0), when shooting better than 50 percent from the floor (22-0) and when shooting better than 40 percent from long-distance (17-0).

The two problems with that is that this most definitely is not the regular season and the Bulls have held the Cavs – as they do most opponents in the playoffs – beneath those numbers for most of the series. The ailing Cavaliers will need the homecourt boost they’re going to get on Tuesday night.

J.R. Smith returned to action in Game 3 and, after a slow shooting start and some foul trouble, bounced back to hit three, three-pointers in the final 6:28 of Friday night’s heartbreaker. Smith was great late again on Sunday afternoon – going 4-for-4 from the floor, including all three three-point attempts as the Wine and Gold evened the series.

With nagging injuries keeping Kyrie Irving from being himself on the offensive end – averaging 11.5 ppg on 5-for-23 shooting over the last two contests – the Cavaliers will need Smith’s offensive production for all four quarters on Tuesday night and beyond. Smith still hasn’t quite found his mojo in the postseason – topping double-figures just three times in six playoff games after finishing the regular campaign as the squad’s most effective long-range marksmen.

Still, he’s gone 7-for-16 over his last two games and, if the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win is any indication, Swish might be back in business.

With the winning team leading the rebounding battle in each of the first four games of the series, it’s obvious that the battle of the bigs will be a huge factor on Tuesday night.

On Sunday afternoon, Timofey Mozgov had easily his best game of the series – netting 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting – nine boards, three assists and three blocks. Mozgov is averaging 2.5 blocks per contest in the playoffs, 3rd-best in the postseason and he’s swatted at least three shots in five of the Cavs’ eight postseason games.

The Bulls still haven’t officially announced whether Pau Gasol – who missed much of the fourth quarter of Game 3 and all of Game 4 with a strained left hamstring – will go for Chicago on Tuesday. Taj Gibson, starting in place for Gasol, didn’t do much offensively on Sunday and Joakim Noah, while doing his usual great work on the boards, is just 7-for-28 from the floor in the Second Round.

In his three starts, Tristan Thompson is averaging 9.0 points on 58 percent shooting to go with 10.7 boards and 1.0 block.

Whether Gasol can go or not in Game 5, Timo and Tristan will be huge factors in the middle.

Kyrie Irving has been banged up since the Boston series, nursing a sore right foot but he’s determined to push through in Game 5.

After netting 30 points in the series opener and 21 in Game 2, Irving scored 11 and 12 points respectively over the next two – dishing out zero assists on Friday and just a pair in Sunday’s win.

After Monday’s practice, Irving said, “I’d rather give 30 percent, 40 percent, rather than give none at all. I just literally can’t do it. I can’t sit on the bench and be hurt and be OK with that.” Kyrie is always at his best under the bright lights, and the Wine and Gold need Tuesday’s contest at The Q.

Irving’s Chicago counter, Derrick Rose, has been averaging 30.5 points per over the last two games – including the game-winning bomb in Game 3. With Kyrie at full-strength, this might be the best point guard matchup in the Eastern Conference. With Kyrie hurting, the Wine and Gold will have to find a way to make Rose work defensively, and Shump – who’s also hurting – will try to tie him up on the offensive end.

If the Cavaliers can slow Rose down and get any kind of production from Kyrie, they might be able to rely on their 11-time All-Star to take them the rest of the way.

It’s going to be a common theme in every game of every series: Which unexpected player will step outside his normal role and make a big playoff contribution?

In Cleveland’s previous Second Round win at The Q, James Jones canned five three-pointers to finish with 17 points and Matthew Dellavedova added nine points and a game-high nine assists. J.R. Smith can hardly be considered an X-factor, but he has brought some big energy off the bench – especially in final period, where he’s scored 20 of his 27 points in the series.

Shawn Marion hasn’t played much in the postseason, Mike Miller struggled in his lone start and Kendrick Perkins has been effective in small doses. With Kevin Love on the shelf for the remainder of the postseason – and Kyrie and Iman Shumpert ailing – the Cavaliers are going to need an unlikely hero to step up and provide a spark. The only question is: Who’s it gonna be?

After winning 86-84 on Sunday afternoon, the Cavaliers will look to gain a 3-2 lead in their series against the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Over the last three games of this series, Cleveland has held Chicago to an average of 91.3 points on .380 (98-258) shooting from the field. In Game 4, Cleveland limited the Bulls to 84 points on an opponent postseason-low 32-89 (.360) shooting, including 56 points on 20-66 (.303) shooting over the final three quarters. In the 2015 Playoffs, Cleveland is allowing the 2nd-lowest opponent field goal percentage (.414), while ranking 1st among all 16 playoff teams in blocks per game (7.0) and 3rd in opponent points per game (94.0).

In Game 4 against Chicago, Cleveland shot 23-24 (.958) from the foul line, which ties their highest free throw percentage with at least 20 attempts in franchise playoff history (also 23-24, .958 FT% vs. Detroit on April 26, 2009). In the playoffs, the Cavs are shooting .806 from the free throw line (2nd among teams currently in the playoffs), including 41-43 (.953) in the last two games.

In Game 4, Derrick Rose (31 points) and Jimmy Butler (19 points) combined for 50 of Chicago’s 84 points. It was Rose’s second consecutive playoff game with 30 or more points.

Butler and Rose are leading the Bulls in scoring during this postseason with 22.6 and 21.4 points, respectively.

LeBron James, who hit his 3rd career game-winning playoff buzzer-beater in Game 4 on Sunday, has recorded a double-double in five of the last six playoff games. This postseason, he is leading the Cavs in points (26.5, 4th in NBA), rebounds (10.1, 11th), assists (7.8, 4th) and steals (2.0, tied-6th) to go along with 1.4 blocks (16th). James is averaging a near triple-double in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against Chicago with 26.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, 9.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks in 40.8 minutes per game.

In Game 4, J.R. Smith shot perfect from the field in the fourth quarter for 11 points (4-4 FG, 3-3 3FG) and finished with 13 points and three rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench. In two games since returning, Smith has scored 20 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter.
