Shumpert Visits the U.S.S. Cod Submarine Memorial

On Veterans Day and all year round, the Cleveland Cavaliers need to look no further than their own backyard to find great military tradition. The U.S.S. Cod Submarine Memorial is a World War II submarine and National Historic Landmark located just down the street from Quicken Loans Arena in North Coast Harbor.

As part of the team’s Hoops for Troops initiative (presented by Ohio CAT), to learn more about the rich history of the sub and the Navy personnel who have manned it, Cavs player Iman Shumpert toured the U.S.S. Cod on Monday. He was joined by preselected military families who are supported by the USO of Northern Ohio.

Shumpert and his guests were welcomed aboard the sub and led through the inner-dwellings of the vessel. They were able to explore everything from the torpedo rooms to the officers’ quarters. They also checked out a steam-driven torpedo, a one-ton bronze submarine propeller and a search periscope.

As an extra treat for the USO families, at the end of the sub tour, Shumpert surprised them with passes for the nearby Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
