Fifth Graders Go Green with their Food

The Wine & Gold know you’re never too young to “go green,” which was the message received this month by students across Northeast Ohio participating in the team’s Read to Achieve and Fit as a Pro programs. One lucky fifth grade class from Walton Investment School was able to practice that hands-on with the Cavs on Monday.

The students spent the afternoon at Quicken Loans Arena to see first-hand how they can be eco-conscious when both shopping for food and eating it. As part of the Read to Achieve initiative, presented in association with Castaway Bay, Cavs PA announcer Olivier and in-arena host Ahmaad read “To Market, To Market” by Nikki McClure with the class. The book is about a boy and his mother going to the market to buy fresh food and produce.

Cavs mascots Moondog and Sir C.C. also did a puppet show based on the action in the book.

Next up, Chef Adam Lizak and Chef Natalie Blake from Aramark demonstrated how to make a few healthy items inspired by the book. As part of the Fit as a Pro program, presented by Medical Mutual and Giant Eagle and in association with Musselman’s Apple Sauce, the students were able to taste test the apple, brie and honey on crostini as well as the smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber bites.
