CLEVELAND, OH - May 3, 2010 - On April 10, 2010, the Cleveland Wheelchair Cavaliers, presented by the Cleveland Clinic and Invacare, won their first National Championship with a thrilling 54-46 defeat of the Detroit Diehards in Denver, Colorado. During halftime of tonight’s Cavs vs. Celtics playoff game, the Cavaliers and Cleveland Clinic will recognize and honor the team for their accomplishment. The players will be presented with championship rings and a banner that will be hung in the Cavs practice court at The Q, which is where the Wheelchair Cavaliers practice.
Coached by Tim Fox, the Wheelchair Cavs went 6-1 in the grueling double elimination National Championship tournament. Will Waller was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while Juan Woidtke was named 1st team all tournament and Steve Smutak was named to the 2nd team.
Winning the National Championship is the culmination of a great season for the Wheelchair Cavaliers. They kicked off their season with a second place finish in the New York City Mayor’s Cup in October and also finished second in the Ohio Governor’s Cup and were the Mid American Wheelchair Basketball Conference Champions.
