On a perfect August evening in Akron, nearly 25,000 Cavalier fans witnessed the re-coronation of a King – sharing a celebration of his past, present and future.

But Friday’s festivities weren’t focused on LeBron James’ exploits on the floor. They were focused on his achievements in the community, his contributions to the city he grew up in and how he’s inspired fans ranging from grade-schoolers to grandmas.

And yeah, it was pretty damn cool to have Sklyar Grey serenade an entire football stadium with her hit, “Coming Home” – followed by the world’s best basketball player (and his family) winding through the crowd to take the stage to a standing-O.

LeBron James rally celebrates his foundation's work in Akron

AKRON, Ohio -- LeBron James called today his favorite day of the year because the children of Akron get to benefit from his accomplishments.

While the four-time NBA MVP has always played a role in the community, this celebration of the LeBron James Family Foundation had special meaning. Last month, James announced he would be returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers after four seasons and two titles with the Miami Heat.

"This has always brought me back," James told reporters. "To be there for these kids, to be able to see the smiles on their faces and what they benefit from this and the education they can receive from this and the guidance they can receive from this, it means so much to me."

LeBron’s No. 1 goal is bringing championship to Cleveland

AKRON — There was a LeBron James love fest Friday evening at the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium, but the approximate 25,000 fans in attendance will look like a small gathering if the Cavaliers one day hold a championship parade.

“On the court, that’s what means the most to me,” James said in a media session prior to the “Welcome Home LeBron Celebration.” “It’s my drive. It’s my only drive.”

Clad in a black cap, black T-shirt, black shorts and black tennis shoes at a press conference that featured two-dozen cameras and more than three-dozen media members, James was friendly and polite throughout, repeatedly stressing his love and admiration for the children of his native Akron.
