Joe G's Practice Notebook
We’re talking ‘bout practice …
Cavs in the Queen City … After dropping the Sixers on Monday night in Columbus, the Cavaliers worked out at the Cintas Arena on the campus of Xavier University. Watching the workout was a reminder how much Mike Brown loves practice. On separate occasions, when the defense was particularly sharp, Brown celebrated as if his team had hit the game-winning basket in the playoffs.
But the real fun took place after practice, when one Cavalier cracked up the assembled media and another group reached out and touched the community here in Cincinnati.
The entertainment was supplied by Anderson Varejao.
After practice, Andy was asked about his close friend and, in many ways, NBA mentor, Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Big Z – the Cavs all-time leader in games played – is scheduled to have his number raised to the rafters on March 8.
“This is ridiculous, I can’t believe they’re going to retire his jersey,” deadpanned the Wild Thing. “What did he do?”(Check out the video HERE – Andy teases his close friend at the 1:53 mark.)
Varejao then went on to praise Ilgauskas for his contributions to the city, the organization and even to his own development as a young international player.
Good Samaritans in Cincy … After practice at Xavier, several Cavaliers players, coaches and broadcasters made the trip over to St. Francis Seraph School in downtown Cincinnati, teaming up with the humanitarian organization Samaritan’s Feet to wash the feet of 160 local underserved kids before fitting them each with a new pair of socks and shoes.
The Cavaliers who took part in the event were Sergey Karasev, DeSagana Diop, Henry Sims, Jermaine Taylor and Elliot Williams. Also on hand were assistant coaches Jamahl Mosley, Igor Kokoskov and Vitaly Potapenko and broadcasters Fred McLeod, Austin Carr, John Michael and Jim Chones.
The young Cavs fans were escorted down to the school’s cafeteria, where volunteers – including the Cavs contingent – took their time to talk with each child as they washed their little feet and gave them brand new socks and shoes.
