Cavs Celebrate the Birthday of President Abraham Lincoln
with Educational Party at Little Red Schoolhouse

Ten score and four years ago, one of our nation’s great leaders and civil rights activists, President Abraham Lincoln, was born. In honor of President Lincoln’s birthday, the Cavs put on their party hats for education at the historic Little Red Schoolhouse in Oberlin, Ohio as part of Read to Achieve presented by Time Warner Cable in association with Castaway Bay and the Cavaliers Black Heritage Celebration presented by State Farm.
Cavs players Tyler Zeller and CJ Miles spent the afternoon with 20 students of the Louis Agassiz Elementary School to learn about President Lincoln, the history of the Little Red Schoolhouse and how they both have significant ties to Black History Month. The students wore bright colored top hats inspired by honest Abe as Zeller and Miles read “Looking at LINCOLN” by Maria Kalman aloud and discussed the importance of literacy.
“It’s a great feeling to have the opportunity to teach students about Black History Month and the early contributions of President Lincoln to help improve race relations,” said Cavs guard/forward CJ Miles. “Working with the Little Red Schoolhouse was a fun way to learn about what it was like to be a student in Ohio during those times and how we attempted to move past segregation.”
The Cavs players and students also took a step into the past to see what life was like at the schoolhouse, which was built in 1836 as an integrated school in defiance of Ohio’s “Black Laws”. The group learned about Lincoln’s work to combat slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation and what it was like to be a student in the 1800s through activities including carrying a water yoke, writing on a slate and walking on stilts.
