Past Youth Basketball Team of the Week Winners

The McKinley Technology High School's girl's basketball team, a member of the DCIAA, has been named this week's Wizards and Mystics Team of the Week in recognition of their academic excellence and commitment to the community.

Last year in his first season as head coach, Greg Bacon fought an uphill battle with a short bench all season long. Despite having only seven girls eligible to compete during the 2010-2011 season, the Trainers earned a berth in the conference playoffs. More impressive is what came as a result of the new requirements that Bacon set for his players off the court, academic excellence and community involvement. The team has risen to the challenge and boasts a team GPA of 3.13. In addition to the commitment to academics, community service is also very important to the team. Last season the Trainers unselfishly served DC's Central Union Mission assisting in making beds for homeless men in the Nation's Capital. They also volunteered with programs aiding battered children in the DC area. Bacon says that, "more important than the wins and losses is that my players graduate from high school as responsible young adults with a set of good core values and a sense of responsibility for the community in which they live."
