Tech Sgt. Matthew Rhiel was honored before Friday night’s win over the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of Heroes United, a program presented by the Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation and Roger and Nancy McCabe that recognizes Minnesota troops for their dedication and service.
Rhiel is a member of the 133rd Airlift Wing of the Minnesota National Guard. In 2003, he enlisted at age 19 and now serves as a communication link between bases.
“It’s a lot of fun, we get to do a lot of traveling,” Rhiel said. “Our job is to install the telecommunication infrastructure, so we get to travel from base to base whether it’s in Afghanistan or in the United States.”
He has deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Afghanistan and while establishing maintaining communications at various bases, he’s made some of his best friends.
Constant travel and camaraderie are his favorite parts of the job.
“Some of my best friends are in the same unit with me,” he said.
His favorite travel tale occurred during his deployment to Afghanistan.
“I spent three months earlier this year deployed to Afghanistan and installed what is now the largest telecommunications tower at Bagram Airfield,” Rhiel said. “It’s at the highest point on the base to expand their radio communications range.”
Friday night’s matchup also marked the beginning of the FastBreak Foundation’s Season of Giving presented by Spire Federal Credit Union.
The FastBreak Foundation presented a $5000 grant to the Sanford Children’s Fund. Children from all over the nation come to Sanford Health to be treated for minor to life-threatening diseases and illnesses. Sanford Health knows that children need comfort and laughter, and each day, Sanford Health ensures the children receive the care they deserve.
Minnesota Timberwolves president Chris Wright and Spire Federal Credit Union CEO Dan Stoltz presented the check to Sanford Health CEO Kelby Krabbenhoft and Nate White, COO for the Sioux Falls division.
