You might say that I was torn back around the time that the Wolves were showcased among the NBA’s big teams.  Remember during the holidays and the NBA’s popular Christmas TV schedule in which they tangled with OKC. The Wolves, nearly injury free, were beginning to “get it.”

I was torn back then because I was hoping they’d have turned the corner. Win and win two of every three.  Maybe four of five night in and night out.  I was confident they would but when losses mount, as they were then with nine wins in 28 games, doubt did creep in. So, in my heart of hoop-hearts, I simply wasn’t sure how I was feeling. I was secretly a “Doubting Thomas.”

Now I know. Some two months later, the season in a full court dash, the Wolves will show us. Injuries have cost the Wolves one of the talented young starters but they are not standing pat. This team is beginning to turn the corner. No more doubting.  I’m fine and doubling down on hope and confidence.

That is why I truly believe this team will get in to the playoffs. Likely that last Western Conference playoff spot. And the Wolves will have earned it.  Just check the schedule for proof.

From Feb. 25 through the end of the regular season on April 12, the Wolves will play 16 of their final 24-games on the road. Twelve of those look to be playoff contenders and they’ll play back to back nights five times. They say adversity defines character?!  It will also determine playoff positioning.

Fans are thinking it too.  Here���s a note from SimonsSays reader Phil just before that recent losing skid:  The Wolves are now 7-3 in the last 10 games. With 35 to go, how many runs like that you think we need to finally capture that playoff spot (which will disrupt events in MN and turn "normalcy" on its head I have no doubt)? My take: With just about eight games left before the All-Star break, I personally feel they've got to win 70 percent of those games. It always helps to go into the break with momentum. That kind of streak will put the Wolves closer to .500, thus reducing the gap with Denver. After the break… you can say playoffs, so momentum like that tends to carry over, just as a confidence thing, which this team seem to be gaining with every 48 mins played.

Phil thanks for checking in and I’m with you. I insist that this up and down play is hard on the Wolves fan. That fan must weed through the negative chat around the team. And believe it, growing up in the NBA is hard.  A lot of teams can stockpile young talent and never becoming a winning team and turn around from a loser to winner. The Wolves are looking for that perfect mix of young studs and complimentary veterans to be competitive every night.

This note just came hours after the Wolves stunned Toronto at the Target Center. Benjamin wrote, “You had to love the Wolves beating the Raptors. All I can say is that it’s Tyus time. Your thoughts?”

The victory over Toronto indeed showcased coach Tom Thibodeau at work. Finding a different mix at a vital time. Playing Jones, newly signed Lance Stephenson and sixth man Shabazz Muhammad in the 4th quarter crunch time. Jones hit a dramatic 3-pointer with 19-seconds left, Stephenson gave the Wolves 20 minutes and a veteran six points and four rebounds.  Shabazz was serious with 22 points and vital leadership and energy.

It’s too early to count out this team. I get excited to think that this early spring in the Twin Cities will have us watching the Wild chase the Stanley Cup, the Twins turning around their fortunes and the Wolves returning to the NBA post-season.

Simons Says | Staying In The Hunt

Win six of eight games and you will turn heads.  Especially in these parts. Doesn’t matter the sport. The Wolves have done just that.

Fans have been waiting for the Wolves to turn the corner for years.  Through the Budinger and Foyes. Barea to Brandon Roy to Ridnour and dozens and dozens in between.

I think about all the players and coaches who’ve come and gone as the Wolves try to find that perfect fit to fix their playoff drought.  It’s tested the patience of the best of fans, but it’s not just our Minnesota NBA team looking for successful renovation work.  The Indiana Pacers can be found in this equation as well. I know because I caught the Wolves-Pacers game day shootaround, in part, to compare notes.  But also to reconnect with longtime friend, former Seattle Super Sonics point guard and Pacers coach Nate McMillan.

You learn a lot from just watching and observing in this media only settings.  Quiet and dim, Target Center’s only buzz was all the construction carrying on around us and the bouncing basketballs. My eagerness was simply to catch pregame goings-on as the Wolves readied for Indiana.

McMillan is one of my all-time favorite guys. We hit if off years ago when he hit Seattle soil after being drafted out of North Carolina State in the ‘90s. I covered the Sonics extensively and really, you could tell then that McMillan was always going to be a coach. As a collegiate, as a pro leading the George Karl coached Sonics and then, moving into the NBA coaching ranks. You could just see it.  That was what he would do the rest of his life.

That hasn’t been easy.  McMillan assumed the bench boss seat just this past season in Indiana and team president Larry

Bird caught plenty of flak for the move. Hoosier state fans wanted more.  The expected a hire of another kind.  Perhaps, a bigger name? Bird liked McMillan’s patience, work ethic, defensive emphasis and his ability to relate to players. Those attributes were things the media said McMillan lost after years coaching the Portland Trail Blazers. He hasn’t.

What’s obvious is that if you coach for a boss who’s known as “Larry Legend”, it has its challenges. These days, fans know King James and Kevin Durant and other forwards who turn heads. In HIS day, no one was better than Bird. He simply was one of the best. Seeing Bird tab McMillan to coach his team was sweet.

McMillan admits that finding that “fix” is not easy.  And it’s not. How many other NBA teams swing and miss every year.  It’s elusive and frustrating but addicting too as the effort is made.

McMillan sees a very bright future for the Wolves.  Much like many other NBA coaches. What makes his words and praise ring for me is that he’s building with many pieces and problems that pop up like the Wolves.

The Pacers have played through a ton of injuries this season and have managed to play .500 ball.  Pretty good from my seat outside the arena but to McMillan, clearly not enough.

As the Wolves finished their day-of-game shootaround and walked off the court, McMillan’s Pacers were still behind closed doors.  Listening. Likely not talking much. Anxious to get out of that tiny cramped visitors’ locker room.

Likely with a different script but same song, Wolves head coach Tom Thibodeau was talking about it all on the other end of the arena, too. Preaching patience and hard work, players committing to all the disciplines being thrown at them and more.

There’s so much more to just the game played on the court 82 times a season. The NBA life is played out in a gym. Day and night. Seven days a week.  Not always bright lights and screaming fans.

The Wolves are getting “it.” The young players are climbing over that hump. On this night, the Pacers took the “W” but the Wolves day is coming, I’m convinced it’s not far off.

An outsider’s opinion means something and McMillan likes what he sees from the Wolves. I like that because it’s a friend’s opinion. And hanging with him over his career, I’ll take it.

Simons Says | The Vibe Is Back

There was a lot going on. The peaceful transition of power in Washington D.C. was rounding third base and heading for home. The red-hot NHL Wild was in a tangle with the Arizona Coyotes in St. Paul. The kids studying for tests. Work to do. Everywhere you turned, making a date with a left coast 9:30 p.m. tip for the Wolves and the LA Clippers was a chore. And as it turned out, this Thursday was must-see TV.

Not just because the Wolves played another outstanding game and continued to grow, mature and show those many naysayers that they CAN play. The game was nationally broadcast on TNT. It was played on a day when NBA All-Stars were announced.  It also comes on the heels of some other tremendous victories against Houston and Oklahoma City.

Minnesota started strong, lulled in the second quarter and then after half, did what they haven’t done all season.  They played two strong quarters, outscoring LAC in both and closed. Finished, as they say today. The young, aggressive and talented Wolves matched LAC at every dribble. The most telling stat and one not lost on the Wolves were securing their first win in 11 games when the final is decided by four points or less. In short, this one did not get away.

It’s big. And on the day when All-Star names are being bandied about in one of the most glam towns in the world, Wolves stud Karl-Anthony Towns showed why he deserves a roster spot on that team.

Towns IS the real deal.  No headline here as we all know this, right?!  I’ve said it time and time again and to the point of getting laryngitis for all the talk. Towns sealed the Clips fate with his play down the stretch. Towns has done it before but when KAT leads the Wolves to beat marquee teams, like the Clips and as he did last April when the Wolves derailed the Warriors, it’s another sign that the tide IS turning for this pack of Wolves.

KAT is king. The athletic big man dropped 37 points with 12 boards and dished out five assists in nearly 41-minutes. KAT shot 17 of 24.  He missed just seven shots!  In many losses, Towns tells the media that the loss is on him. KAT takes it for the team.  KAT lifts the “L” to his broad shoulders and carries that weight. Well, on this night, shift the “L” to “W” and cut a smile in the process.

Let’s face it, losing sucks. Especially when it’s a young and talented team that has enormous expectations. Fans ingest the possibilities and potential and when it doesn’t happen immediately or faster than you can order food at the drive-thru, you turn away. Grumbling. I get it.  Losing makes fans uneasy, it gives this new media pack time to punch out stories of trades, dissention and change that needs to occur when in fact, all the team needs to do is grow. It needs to make its mistakes and find its footing and build on every win.  And yes, build with wins like this against LAC.

Good news for Wolves fans. After the past decade-plus, it’s happening. All that losing has forced many fans away. That happens.  But in the mix of all the other things to do, all the priorities you have to take care of and the many options you have for your attention, it’s going to be okay to turn back to the T’Wolves. The Wolves are on the right path and growing up right before your eyes.

Those hoop “have-nots” that I call them, on social media or who aren’t fans but love to bury the team, the fair-weather fan and other naysayers may have given up on the season too soon. I’ve said this recently and it’s truer today. The Wolves DO have a lot more in the tank. Yes, there’s work to do but wins against the Rockets and Thunder and Clips shows there is something happening.

So, in this day of take a cheap shot and run, hide behind nasty social media posts and all, go for it. Be one of the pack to play it off.  If they keep up their play of late, the Wolves could find their way into the Western Conference playoff picture. They are not out of it.

It was a late night but a Thursday I’m likely not to forget. Much like the Wolves visit to Golden State in which played out like David vs. Goliath, that game remains on my DVR just to remind me.  It’s proof.  So is this Clips win.

As sure as a Trent Tucker “3” ball. As glorious as an Abdul-Jabbar hook shot. As sweet as a Magic Johnson dish. And as much fun as a Flip Saunders midnight hoops gathering in Mankato, bookmark games like these of late. It’ll make the payoff that much more enjoyable.

Simons Says | It's Happening

Merry Merry and happy holidays and holy days to you! Whatever you want to call it, however you choose to celebrate… Christmas is here and I for one am hoping the holiday vibe brings cheer, and certainly, more wins.

This time of year never fails to bring me new found “hope” for the New Year to come. As a huge hoops fan, I’ve been eager to get here because it’s a very special season with the Wolves now front and center on the NBA’s popular Christmas TV schedule.  Playing at Oklahoma City is never easy but for the Wolves, the spotlight is going to help them, on and off the court.

For starters, this first quarter-season has been tough. I’ve been at odds, in a good but contentious way, about how the Wolves will place after what they’ve endured. My basketball buddies and media colleagues think I’m nuts. Seriously gone coo-coo. They have been arguing with me for weeks that the team the NBA scheduled in the off-season for this Christmas showcase (the Wolves) is simply not the team we’re seeing on the court right now. Nine wins in 28 games will spur those arguments. I don’t care.

So, sitting in that mermaid coffee shop directly across from the Arena, watching the construction and renovation work at Target Center before a game the other day, I found myself in a hoop chat with a 25-year-season ticket holder. Dick admitted he was still trying to figure out the Wolves.  Are they the team that got punched by the Pistons, Spurs and Warriors at home then hit the road to beat Charlotte, Chicago and just recently Atlanta?

Dick and so many other fans, including Wolves players and coaches, are clearly frustrated how the season has played out to this point. Dick says he’s had it.  He’s tired of the dark chatter all around the team. “You can’t escape the negative, man. It’s everywhere.” Dick added, “I thought when the Vikings started out and won five straight games, it was all coming together. The Vikings would win and the Wolves would start up and do the same. I actually allowed myself to get caught up and get excited. My wife says that I got carried away with optimism.  I think I might have carried it over to the Wolves, too. Now, the Vikings won’t make the playoffs and my Wolves could lose too many to get in the playoffs, too. So, seeing them on national television Christmas night, yeah, it makes me nervous”.

As I write this and now that I come to think of it, therapy may be needed and in my future. Since I’m still a newspaper reader there are some days I just do a quick scan of headlines and move on.  Then the other day, I turned for the box scores and saw that Utah…yes, UTAH, has improved to the point of jumping into the lead of the Northwest division. No surprise with the Spurs and Warriors continue to be the best in the West and Toronto and Cleveland own the East.  But Utah? The thought that pops into my head is this. If that Jazz team can hit its stride and turn heads, the Wolves certainly can.

I figure there is no better time than on the Christmas TV stage. With Sir Charles and Shaq, Kenny and Ernie stammering on about how the Wolves have underachieved to start the season and how the glass is full for the future. I’ll be honest with you, as much as this season has hammered me so far, beating Atlanta to make it two straight and then a win against triple-threat Russell Westbrook’s Thunder would be sweet and one gigantic step forward.

Seriously, over the past few years I’ve been called every kind of name when writing about the Wolves. From “homer” to “hype-ster” and many many names not suitable for print. I’ll give the naysayers the 19-losses.  But I insist that play, on the road, locking down wins as the Wolves did in Charlotte, that impressive game in the Windy City when Coach T returned to Chicago and then grabbing a “W” on the road in the 4-0-4 is a solid jump start.

It’s cliché but true. In this situation, the Wolves have to lock down what’s right in front of them. Where the Wolves sit now is nothing a nice long winning streak won’t fix. I’ve seen it firsthand. Coach T has his players focused on improving and getting better one game at a time. Watch. You won’t see the Wolves focused down their schedule and getting over their snowshoes. They won’t spend a second dwelling on the Rip City visit this New Year’s Day or Team Harden and Houston again January 11 or even that four game road trip at the end of February. When games are days or weeks away, it does no good. Put it like this, the Wolves will get better in the slow cooking fashion. And the Wolves will improve and show tangible improvement before the All-Star break. All the new systems, coaches and players meshing and getting on that long road back to Ws will be visible.

Santa’s gonna’ be a busy fella and when his work is done and he sits down with a cold one on Christmas evening, I’m confident Santa will have delivered nice tidings to T’Wolves fans.

On my list to the Jolly one, I’ve asked:

a.)    a winning streak. In any denomination. Preferably 6, 8, 10 and maybe 13 games.

b.)    those winning streaks delivered separately.

c.)    A solid second half of the season “Fix-it kit” so leads are safe and wins easier to lock down.

e.)    A winning season for the Wolves baseball neighbors at Target Field.

f.)     Peace and “hope” for everyone in 2017.

Here’s hoping you continue to enjoy the holidays and remember that the season –is- still young. Lots of basketball to play. Heck, we’re soon to be ringing in 2017, that contentious election season is in the rear view mirror and it’s now officially OK to have a little optimism. Perhaps even, a little hope.

Get some tickets in those stockings.  Get out to a game….and say hi if you see me. Let’s do this! It’s time to watch a winner grow right before us. They’ll get there. Mark my words.   

Keeping Sid in our thoughts!  He’s lived over 90-years and still goes stronger than many of us.  As legends go, Sid Hartman is one of Minnesota’s largest and he’s on the mend.  Sid is healing after falling and breaking his hip.  Sid had surgery the next day and then, 24 hours after that, he was gently back on his feet.

Add Sid to your thoughts and prayers this holiday season. Truly, he is one of a kind. Feel better Sid!  You got your GameON!

Simons Says | Hoops On Christmas

You know what time of year it is. Gone are the mild 50s and 60 degree days that enchanted our spirits this fall.  Our next few months are settling in for short days, cold this and cold that. Skyways, mittens, heavy coats and lots of time inside.  For me, that’s with basketball.

You can hear the chatter all around when the weather changes as it is right now. Snow predicted here and falling hard west of us. People have ditched their phones for an umbrella handle and an eye on the sky as they grab the door.

I’m walking into “our” coffee shop with my good friend, my longtime running mate, “Hoops." Hoops and I have drifted a bit this past year. What with his Golden State Warriors losing in seven games to the Kingsmen Cavs, Hoops had to take a hiatus. A break from all things ball.  I’m not sure Hoops knows that the Twins lost 103 games, fired Terry Ryan and have two youngsters Moneyballin’ the boys back into World Series conversation.

Hoops wanted to hook up with me before Thanksgiving to visit and discuss the state of this Wolves team. Hoops calls them them “That” pack. You know how the team is marketed as “The Pack” and “Run with the Pack?!" Hoops can’t stop saying “That” Pack is going to get it done this season.

Hoops (and me, for sure) is no different than many basketball watchers. The Timberwolves are going to get their share of attention and already this season, despite a slow start with just four wins in 11 games, have done a little head turning. There’s been some second guessing by so-called “insiders” but this team is going to have its day and most know that.

Hoops loves to start his Wolves rants by talking about his “friend." The new coach. Hoops is still giddy over by chance meeting we had with head coach Tom Thibodeau before the Rio Olympics (in which Thibs was an assistant on the gold medal team). Hoops says, “You know, Coach is on the right path. These young guys are getting consistent minutes, (Andrew) Wiggins is breaking out and KAT (Karl-Anthony Towns) is seriously one of the best players in the league.  For that, I said, yes, yes and yes.

If any fan expected the Wolves to come out of the gate and do a Cavalier 9-1 to start the season, I’d shout you are nuts. The Wolves are melding and molding together with kinks that will be worked out.  Those second half swoons?!  They’re getting top attention and will be reversed into more dynamic finishes.

Wiggins. Wow. 47 against the Lakers at Target Center with a droppage of 25in the first half?! That’s what an All-Star does and AW will be in the marquee game this winter and not just a Saturday pre-game participant. Averaging 33-points over his past half dozen games.  After pelting the Lakers, AW returned for 29-in a loss to Charlotte then exploded for 35 against the Sixers.  Wiggins is scoring an average of nearly 27 a night and is among the NBA leaders in scoring. Wiggins is more refined this season and what I notice, more than anything, is that he works hard, looks for his shot and is unafraid to take it.  Wiggins is blossoming before our very eyes.  Hoops adding, “Seeing Wiggy do all this makes me miss (Kevin) Garnett a little less”.

And for this Wolves team to take off, as I’m fully expecting, KAT has to co-star in the production, every night.  Towns, who just turned 21, is already one of the best big men in the game. Great to be young, right?!  Dang, KAT brings it every night. Emotion, fire and a determination to dominate the other team. 

What I love about KAT is that he’s locked in for 48-minutes. Garnett did rub off on KAT last season because the kid practices hard and carries it to the court. Pass it on and KG did it!

KAT shot 12 of 18 against Philadelphia. His double-double included 10 rebounds and a couple of blocks.  This is the KAT call sheet nearly every game.  When KAT gets the ball, good things happen.

Hoops was joyous as we discussed those two.  Sprinkle in a little Shabazz, a dash of Dieng and a little LaVine for good measure and the discussion is where we want it.  The Wolves are enduring growing pains that come with new coaches and a new system.  There are plenty of signs this team is jelling, as they should be, as the season grows. I’ll take that win over the Lakers are proof positive.

I was on the West Coast last week listening to the barrage of sports talk shows laying out a case for the Clippers and Lakers to be a Western Conference 1-2-punch.  Clips I understand but the Lakers need a lot more time to become the new and improved Showtime.

My predictions just ahead but for now, keep your eyes on how this Wolves team evolves and picks it collective selves out of those third and fourth quarter funks.  They’ll get there. They are “That” pack. New, improved and now with youthful “seasoning."

I’m excited winter is falling and the holidays are here.  It’s time to watch a winner grow right before us. They’ll get there. Mark my words.  And the party to follow will be sweet.  

It was just a week ago we looked over some of the season predictions laid out by NBA General Managers. So, when you examine and give a close look at the NBA, there are a handful of dominate teams and a large group of teams in waiting.  Injuries will always dictate which teams reach the playoffs but 

I’m confident the teams I see as “finals worthy” won’t be much different than your picks. 

In the East, defending champion Cleveland still rules the roost.  Just the other day, the Cavs beat Toronto in a statement game. The Raptors are surely very capable of reaching the finals and they should win the Atlantic division.

I do like Atlanta, the Celtics and I’m one of those who likes the NY Knicks. I think the Pacers could surprise teams in the East but when it comes down to it, Cleveland should give LeBron his seventh straight trip to the finals.

In the West, Golden State stands above the others…but barely. Can the Clippers do what they are doing all season long? I don’t think so but they are playing with a Beverly Hills sized-chip on their shoulder.  Kinda’ like the Clips against the world, right?!

So, you have GSW and the LAC’s with OKC, perhaps Portland then San Antonio (without Tim Duncan) making a play for the playoffs.  I DO believe the Wolves will, not can, but will reach the post season for the first time in more than a decade.

Last season, I saw the Warriors as the title winner and didn’t see their record setting run playing out.  This June, injuries not a factor, it will be Cleveland.

Congratulations to the Wolves and Lynx for providing closed captioning @ home games. This is important and new closed captioning services will be provided and will appear on Target Center’s new scoreboard. The captions will be displayed on the northeast and southwest corners of the 360-fascia board surrounding the lower bowl. It is estimated that 20 percent of Americans have some form of hearing loss. This service now insures that the deaf and hard-of-hearing Minnesota basketball fans will have an amazing basketball experience.

“We are so glad our new scoreboard has opened up the capability to offer closed captioning for our deaf and hard-of-hearing fans,” said Ethan Casson, Timberwolves &amp; Lynx CEO. “We hope this technology will make our games more accessible to this group and give them an enjoyable in-arena experience.”     Wolves guard Zach LaVine has been very involved with the Metro Deaf school, including his donation in April that helped build a new kitchen. The money was a portion of his Slam Dunk Contest winnings.     "As rabid Minnesota basketball fans, we are so proud to be providing arena captioning for the Timberwolves and Lynx,” said Jan Ballman, president and CEO of Paradigm. “The exciting new scoreboard technology in Target Center makes it possible for all to fully enjoy the in-arena game-day fan experience.  We are honored to help bring communication access to the deaf and hard-of-hearing Minnesota basketball fans when playing in our house!"

Simons Says | Now It's Time To Play Ball

How about that presidential election?! The Vikings free fall is on Minnesota’s mind, more politics, perfect fall weather and more politics. Just some of the topics grabbing all the attention.  So, where are the Timberwolves in this story log?

Well, nowhere to be found and believe it or not, right now, that’s OK by me. Certainly head coach Tom Thibodeau would disagree I expect.  This “season of great expectations” is not off to the start that so many Wolves faithful had hoped. But the Wolves are just a few games in and there is plenty of time to get it righted.  And they will. And getting that done under “the radar” works for me.

I loved watching the Wolves from the road.  Always fun to go into an unknown sports bar and see your team and the Wolves looked great against Orlando. For the entire game!

I did it while on a business trip in which I ran into a pack of Houston hoopologists. Fans in that south Texas town have the same hopes for their revamped, up-tempo Rockets. They love their basketball, especially with the subpar season being played by their University of Houston Cougars and the NFL Texans. So, after an earful of James Harden this and Corey Brewer that, I reminded my colleague that once the Wolves “gel” and take one big next step this season, fans, like him, will watch a Wolves team that turn heads. Nightly.

Night in and night out. Be it the Cavs or Clips, the Spurs or OKC, Golden State or Dwane Casey’s good-looking Raptors. The Wolves are not far away and slow to get it together so far. But no worries.

I can’t get enough of the possibilities. In our Houston hot hoops chat, I reminded my buddies of what’s coming down the interstate. Karl-Anthony Towns is as good as any young player to enter the NBA in my lifetime. KAT isn’t even scratching the surface of all the good things to come in his game.

As good as Kevin Garnett was, KAT could surpass KG benchmarks. Talk to those who are constantly around Towns and they’ll intimate details that solidify his greatness.  In just his second NBA season!

A hoop “hoarder” I’m not, but I do actually save a pack of games. No, not to VCR or reel-to-reel, but DVR’d and all to remind myself of that KAT.  Let’s see….saved in the Simons Fan Cave is Game 1 from last season. Remember that?! It was played just days after the passing of Flip Saunders. At Staples Center In LA to play Kobe and the Lakers. I also toggle through an impressive win last season in Brooklyn.  There are two preseason games saved from just last month. Games in which KAT killed me! Slicing through the lane with off-balance jump shots, defensive domination and ability that few men his size has to run the court with the best of point guards. KAT is king ya’all.  So, clicking that little blue “keep” flag to save the Wolves games is vital for my hoop health.  And before I leave this train of thought, also saved (forever I might add) is the stunning win at Oakland against the Warriors last April.

I’m still “In” on the Wolves and you will be (if you aren’t already there) before long. As the season has started, much is being made about the team’s second half struggles (pick the quarter), inconsistent shooting and yes, the losses.  My takeaway from the Brooklyn loss this week is this: The Wolves will wind up winning, not losing, more of those close games this season. Andrew Wiggins brought me out of my election-coverage-watching chair when he soared for a slam, only to miss. But his aggressiveness, his speed and fearlessness is I want to see. THAT kind play from #22.  He’s doing it. 

Coach Thibs has made a point with the media, several times during the preseason, to warn media members to be careful about “judging” a players demeanor. And yes a player like Wiggins. AW is soft spoken, goes about his business and carries himself unlike so many brash and in-your-face athletes. Coach T told the media that Wiggins was as competitive as any player he’d coached. Wiggins is a lion but doesn’t show it off.

My buddies, those hoopologists, were all-ears by this point in our meeting. While talking NBA, our task at hand had truly moved from why we were there to the Wolves. Houston and most NBA watchers now know what’s percolating here in the land of 10k lakes. They know about KAT. They can see the growth and maturation of Wiggins.  They only dream of being able to dunk like Zach LaVine, to have the athleticism and promise of Kris Dunn. Fans in other NBA towns know what’s coming. And we should too.  These are also great young men who “get it."  Fans don’t have to lose faith.

Make no mistake, Wolves players hate losing and this “adjustment” period is bothersome.  After the Nets loss days ago, LaVine told the media, “it’s really frustrating….we need to hurry up and start getting it together.”

As the new season rolls through its first month, there has been plenty of player movement, teams with new identities and many teams, like Minnesota, with raised hopes and expectations. The early shake out is well underway. Who would have thought that the Thunder would win six of the first seven games without Kevin Durant bolting to Golden State? Utah is much better.  So are teams in Charlotte, Atlanta, as well as the LA Clippers.

The Wolves are just a little slow to the party, “fashionably late,"if you will.  They’ll get there. Mark my words.  And the party to follow will be sweet.  

As the season started, NBA General Managers gathered and outlined their thoughts on the best teams, players, coaches, offseason moves for the 2016-17 NBA season. The general managers were not allowed to vote for their own team or personnel.

Simons Says | Have No Fear. . . The New Day Is Here!

Yeh, a couple of quick snow showers, the Twins opening on the road and the political TV yak yak jamming my head. Rush hour headaches and homework for my little one. The daily dash of life.  So, something lost on many that will forever stick with me was a basketball game. It was a night on a business trip in which we watched the Wolves grow up.

A spatter of games remains in, as I put it time and again, one of the most challenging NBA seasons in T’Wolves history. But make no mistake about it, the Wolves made a huge statement the other night in Oakland.

The defending NBA Champion Golden State Warriors are special. They are playing for history.  Playing for the most wins ever over an NBA season. Playing for back to back NBA titles. So, a Wolves naysayer might bellow that the Warriors gave it away, perhaps, their hearts weren’t into this one game. That ain’t the case. Not even close. The Wolves grew up right before our droopy eyes as late Tuesday night moved into Wednesday morning. They did it on national TV. They went high-top to high-top against the best team in the NBA. And they whooped ‘em.

If you didn’t see it, then you have no idea how spectacular it truly was.

Impressive stats in a moment but do know this. “The O”, Oracle Arena as it’s now called, is a tough place to play for an opponent. It’s loud.  It’s old.  It’s meant to be a home court advantage and when the team is good, as the Warriors are now, it’s normally chalked up to be an “L” on the schedule on your visit. I’ve been as a media member and a fan. My wife will never go back after being treated rudely as a visiting fan. It’s tough.

So, what Minnesota did was, not only show up, they showed off. They kicked butt. And these stats were vital to that coming of age game:

&gt;Golden State had the Wolves by 17-points and lost. Minnesota rallied with precision to win.

&gt;the Wolves had a flare for the dramatic in overtime by outscoring GS 18-11. NO easy task. On the road. TV. Nerves. And the players were loving it.

&gt;GS had not lost ALL season when leading at half. Make it now 61-1 please.

&gt;Give it up for the Wolves “D”. Lost in the shuffle a bit is that yes, a lot of points were scored in this 124-117 win, but the Wolves forced 24 GS turnovers. That is impressive against a very fundamentally, tested team.

&gt;How about Andrew Wiggins?! AW knocked down 32 points with 27 in the second half and OT. Just as importantly, his “D” was shutdown. AW had a career-best six steals.

&gt;and KAT man. WOW! Just give him the Rookie of Year hardware now please. Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 points and 12 rebounds. KAT blocked two shots which gave him 132 for the season and allowed him to pass Kevin Garnett (131 blocks, 1995-96) for the team record. KAT now has 49 double-doubles this season.

&gt;Let’s not forget Shabazz Muhammad. Bazz came off the bench to drop a career-best 35 points with 15-of-17 at the line. Bazz played around 39 minutes tonight and only missed 3 shots from the field. Shabazz is a key contributor on this team. That can’t be mentioned enough.

I couldn’t go to sleep with this late thriller unfolding from the Bay Area. That overtime was absolutely stunning when GS would pull back within a bucket; there was a play like KAT’s call, slicing through the lane with the sweet and soft flick of the ball into the bucket and then one. It was a game this young crew will simply never forget. Into the lion’s den and walked out the victor.

Yes, it was the team’s 26th win on paper but so much more. It’s that turn of the corner which so many loyal Wolves fans have been waiting to see.  Even if they didn’t stay up to see it.

Call me sappy if you’d like but as I was watching it unfold, I couldn’t help thinking that it was Flip’s touch at seasons end as well. Scoff if you’d like but this is a team, this is an organization, that’s been through the wringer this season. The Saunders' sudden death, new personalities and ideas now thrust upon this young group of professionals in a short amount of time under tremendous strain and unfathomable grief. Good karma was in the “O” air.

The Wolves are not only on the right path but they now can tell their critics to “lighten up” and give them some room to breathe. It takes time to build teams for the future and greatness.  Piece by piece. A player here and a personality there. It comes together. Sometimes faster than others.  But in time it shows its face and the Wolves did on the West Coast.

I’m not an “I told you so” kind of guy. I don’t even think of throwing something back at those who venomously disagree with me. But the Wolves have already won 11-games more than last year, they handed the NBA Champions a huge loss and most importantly, Minnesota’s back on the NBA map with even better things to come. 

I loved this note that arrived in my e-mail hours after the win over the Warriors. Daniel wrote, “I truly enjoyed watching the Wolves beat Golden State.  I read you often and admit, I’ve hammered you with a few emails. I can just imagine you loved it.  You are one of the only media guys I know who actually has been on the bandwagon (as you call it). I don’t know how you do it because they drive me crazy but I do love the Timberwolves. Thanks and sorry for bad mouthing you. Game  on”.

Wouldn’t that make YOUR day?! It did mine. And NO need for apologies Daniel. I get it. I get frustrated.  But for all the angst that we fans feel, it’s nothing in comparison with the guys on the court, those Wolves staffers trying to sell tickets, the coaches working to get the boys to grow into basketball men. I loved your note and thank you.

As I said last week, these guys are simply too flat out good to be down too long. What I didn’t know is that they’d whip up on the Warriors to prove me right.

Thanks to the Wolves. It’s been a week to remember. It’s one I’ll never forget

As always, I love your notes and I’ve  answered a very poignant letter. But I thought this one was interesting and it certainly caught my eye. Thought you’d like it.

John writes, “Rod, I keep seeing Scottie Pippen spout on about the Bulls being a better team than the Warriors.  How do you side on this one? And don’t sit on the fence or I’ll never read this or watch Game ON again.  Keep up the good work”.

John, great letter! And since you give me no out, I lean Chicago. In 1996, I watched the Sonics hand the 72-win Bulls one of their few losses during the regular season then get handed their shorts in the NBA Finals. That Bulls team was special. 

The Warriors are very good and have their place as such but the best team I ever watched is MJ’s Bulls. I also remember seeing the record setting 1970-71 L.A. Lakers (Chicago broke LA’s 69 wins for the record) with Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, Happy Hairston, Jimmy McMillan and Coach Bill Sharman. No big man from the Bulls era matched Wilt and most fans have no appreciation for the greatness of West. THAT was an amazing team that made me smile as a young kid. In fact, that Lakers team introduced me to my love of the NBA game.

So John, thanks for the note and the short drive down NBA memory lane.  Off the fence I appreciate all three teams but the Bulls get my nod.

Simons Says | A Week To Remember

Just a handful of games remain in one of the most challenging seasons in T’Wolves history. From securing and enjoying No. 1 draft pick Karl-Anthony Towns to the passing of Flip Saunders and all the highs and lows of this marathon season. There will be many thoughts and conversations regarding the season that’s just flew but clearly, a lot of deep breaths will also be taken.

I see it every day and it’s evident in the emails I’ve accumulated. Whether I’m in or out of town, spring break here and numerous projects there… I’ve realized Wolves fans are dialed in, they want more and they are anxious for their team to turn the corner.

The notes are wide ranging and I’m still not going to be able to get to all of them. So, it’s time to share. And let me know what you think…do you agree or not and do you have a differing opinion?

Jackson writes regarding Nikola Pekovic. ALL season long, Pek’s health has been on the minds of fans. Jackson asks, “Do you think we’ll ever see Pekovic play a full season with the Wolves? I personally don’t think we will but I’d love your thoughts. Thanks and keep up the good work.”

Hey Jackson, thanks for being on the fan wagon. You offer up the question I get asked the most. Pek was able to play a little bit this season but not much. I know that sitting on the sidelines watching and not being able to contribute is killing him. But this is not the first time that the legs and feet of basketball players, big men in particular, have broken down.

Will Pek continue on? I dunno. Will he be the Pek of pre-big contract, likely not. But here’s hoping his recovery continues and good fortune shines on him. Nikola Pekovic is one of my favorites.  When healthy, he’s a game changer.  He’s a friend of my TV show GameON! and joined us for our ceremonial 100th show. Here’s only the best for Pek!

Jonathan writes: I read you every week and one thing you rarely talk about is the effect losing has on players.  I saw a comment on TV that players don’t like to go to losing teams. Does losing affect their decisions?

Jonathan thanks for the note. I’ll try to answer your question as simply as I can. I don’t know what comment to which you are referring. Whatever the case, these are the best basketball players in the world so yes, they hate to lose and do all they can to avoid it. That’s part of an NBA players DNA, or at least, I hope it is.

I don’t think losing keeps all players from playing in Phoenix or Minneapolis or Brooklyn or wherever.  It can factor in for some players but if they are good, they are being paid to turn around that team’s fortunes. So the paycheck comes first for some players.

Let’s face it.  Losing sucks. Regardless if you are an NBA or NFL player, if you work in a hospital or bank or TV station, bad days are bad days. We all like the good over the bad, right?!

NBA Players are no different. It’s how you work, collectively, to get it turned around when it becomes fun. That “next level” is exciting. Case in point, Toronto. The Raptors are winning again and the game is fun for everyone there.  Those guys can’t wait to get back to the arena. They get paid well; they enjoy their job and love the relationship with the fans. All is good.

When that all melds and comes together here, it will be very special. And it could be soon.  These guys are simply too flat out good to be down too long.  Already, they are much better than a season ago and improving.

So yes, losing stinks. Winning rocks and will be coming to your Arena soon.  How’s that?!

Darrel writes about the teams up and down play: “Man, can the NBA get rid of those crazy back to backs? The Wolves beat Washington in a double OT thriller then lose the next night at home. They beat the Suns and get hammered by the Clippers. I think It’s hurting not just the Wolves but other NBA teams.  I’m getting sea sick watching these guys. Spin that Mr. Simons Says”.

SimonsSays detects a tinge of sarcasm. Yes?! Easy on that, OK Darrel?  It’s sometimes more powerful that garlic.

I agree about back to backs. Gotta lose more of those. They do no good. But in terms of scheduling, are vital. Furthermore, the rollercoaster that is the Wolves season drives the players crazy too but its part of their collective growth and improvement. As for the sea sickness, carry around a bag if you are out and about.

Easy for me.  Either the Golden State Warriors will cap their record setting plus-72-win campaign going back-to-back or the San Antonio Spurs will.  Toronto and Cleveland will challenge in the East but neither can beat the West’s best. LeBron or not.

As always, I love your notes and we’ve already answered a bunch but I thought this one was interesting and it certainly caught my eye. Thought you’d like it.

Aaron writes, “Rod, great to see you are still at it. I was a faithful viewer during your Ch. 5 days and I’m glad you are still around. So, I’ve wondered. If the Vikings and Twins were playing on the same day, which game would you choose if you had to pick. I enjoy this column. Good luck."

Aaron thanks for the note and my off-camera laughs that it gave me.  Believe it or not, THIS happens a lot and is sometimes a tough decision. It doesn’t have to be the Vikings or Twins; it can be the Wild or Wolves too. When your two pro teams are playing on the same day, a “double dip” if you will, it’s a present to a sports guy (or gal, see FOX9’s Dawn Mitchell).

The answer is Vikings games (pre-season excluded) get serious priority. They play only a handful of home games every season. IF the Twins are in a pennant chase, that’s a huge factor. I’m a hoopologist so the Wolves always get “A” billing. I use the DVR to cover my back but it really boils down to that game and which is more important. If they are scheduled at different times, that my friend, is a no brainer. I do both. But to answer your great question as well as I can, I do both, if possible.  Life’s too short. Catch as many games as you can. Right?!
