You could not have written a better ending to Wednesday’s game in Miami for Wolves fans.

With his Miami Heat team down 127-126, Jimmy Butler resorted to his trademark hero ball with five seconds remaining in the game. But this time, it was the Wolves who got the last laugh in their meeting with Butler.

Butler made his way past Malik Beasley but was met by three other Minnesota defenders once he made his way into the paint. He went up for a contested layup with 3.4 seconds remaining, seemingly looking to draw a foul, but was instead denied by a clean, game-sealing block from D’Angelo Russell.

Wolves fans erupted back in Minnesota as their newly-acquired point guard shut down the player they’ve severed all ties with. But for Russell, his block wasn’t an attempt to amend the Wolves’ past. It was a sign of what he hopes will be a signature play of his team’s future.

“We were all ready to make a winning play — I look at it like that,” Russell said. “Previous teams (the Wolves) had, you’d probably lose games down the stretch like that. Same here as well, but I think that’s the growing pains and the adjustment we’re trying to make sooner rather than later.

With the game on the line, the Wolves, who’ve been praised for their post-trade-deadline offensive improvements, relied on their defense to claim a road win.

One disciplined contest at the rim isn’t going to fix all of the Wolves’ defensive problems, but it’s a start.

Wolves head coach Ryan Saunders said Russell’s block was emblematic of that attitude he wants his team to play with from here on out. That’s an attitude that doesn’t quit on plays and gives extra effort — especially on the defensive end.

“We know that is something that we need to get better with as a group,” Saunders said. “I thought we did that down the stretch against Miami by eliminating our turnovers, limiting questionable shots.”

The Wolves held a film session on Thursday to reinforce what they’re capable of when they remain committed to their defensive principles.

“When you can get some success on the court and show that if you push through the change and just kind of dig in and stick with it, you’re going to be better for it the next day,” Saunders said. “Our group has done a great job of that, but once again, we don’t want to just look at a Miami game as though we’ve gotten through tough times. We still need to work through a lot of this. The only way to do that is with a focus and mentality of work and winning the day.”

Building team chemistry won’t hurt either and the Wolves have had plenty of opportunities to do so on their four-game road trip.

“You spend every day together, and that helps — especially on the road,” Juancho Hernangomez said. “I think it’s really important to know each other off and on the court — see what the people are like on and off the court and just building relationships. We’re building a family. That’s knowing each other, knowing what we like, what we don’t like, and just trusting each other.”

Before their game against the Heat, James Johnson planned a few team activities for the Wolves and was a catalyst for building the team’s comradery.

“When you go to a city like Miami, you try to have as much fun as you can because the weather’s nice, the scenery’s nice,” Russell said. “We did a team event, and I think it played a major part in our team chemistry growing. James put that together, and I thought it was brilliant.”

Hernangomez shared that Johnson wasn’t just a leader in Miami, where he played before coming to Minnesota. He’s been a leader since he joined the team on Feb. 6.

“You have to be around him to know how big he is off the court and on the court,” Hernangomez said. “He knows everything. He’s been through everything — the good things and the bad things, bad teams and good teams. He knows what we need to win. He knows when we have to focus, when we have to lock in. He just … he’s our leader.”

Russell believes Johnson also serves as a confidence-booster for the young Wolves team full of players hoping to prove themselves.

“He’s giving guys the confidence to want to go out there and compete against anybody, the best in the world,” Russell said. “We’ve got a lot of people on our team trying to play for their stripes, so every night is a chance to win somebody over. He’s giving guys the confidence to do that.”

The Wolves are hoping their improved defense and team chemistry will continue with them as they make their final stop of their four-game road trip in Orlando. The Wolves and Magic will face off at 6 p.m. CT on Friday. The game will be aired on Fox Sports North Plus and 830 WCCO.

Wolves Revere Game-Winning Defense, Budding Chemistry

After eight long days, Timberwolves basketball is back in action!

The Wolves will begin their final 29-game stretch of the season by hosting the Boston Celtics at 7 p.m. CT on Friday.

The Wolves enter Friday’s game with a 16-37 record and are currently 11 games back from advancing to the playoffs. With that in mind, what are the Wolves’ expectations for the remainder of the regular season?

Wolves head coach Ryan Saunders shared the checklist of goals he has for his post-All-Star break team after Friday’s shootaround.

First and foremost, the Wolves still want to win every game left on their schedule.

“That’s why we’re all in this business,” Saunders said. “We love to compete. That’s why you’re in it at the highest level.”

But beyond that, Saunders wants his team to play with a committed devotion to its game plans. When proper execution doesn’t result in a win, that’s where the checklist comes in.

Take the Wolves’ Feb. 10 loss to the Toronto Raptors, for example. The Raptors entered that game on a 14-game winning streak, but the Wolves held their own on the offensive end for most of the game. Yet, Toronto still claimed a 137-126 win at the end of the night.

“Then you have to look more at your checklist in those moments,” Saunders said. “Did you not turn the ball over? Were you a high-assist team? How were you generating your 3s? You got 49 3s up but were they a good 49? Defensively, how was your pick-and-roll defense?

“It’s little things like that that we can measure when maybe the outcome isn’t where we want it to be.”

Of course, Saunders’ checklist isn’t limited to just team goals.

I’d imagine every team in the league holds exit interviews with their players at the conclusion of every season. But I’m not sure how common it is to hold said meetings throughout the season as Saunders and Wolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas do with their players.

Saunders and Rosas held five player meetings on Thursday.

“We got to go through all the statistics with players,” Saunders said. “We allowed them to talk about what they feel they need to work on, we told them what we thought they need to work on, and we’re just trying to be transparent with them.”

Saunders did not specify whether Jarrett Culver was one of the players he and Rosas had a meeting with on Thursday, but he did share that he’d like to see the rookie get more comfortable playing off the ball now that All-Star point guard D’Angelo Russell is on board.

“It’ll be a transition, but we’ve been very adamant about where we are as a team and that we’re looking for growth from these guys,” Saunders said. “Being a young group, that’s what you ask of these guys.”

As expected, Culver has embraced the challenge and is excited to learn from Russell.

“I can learn from (Russell),” Culver said. “When I do have the ball, (I can) see the things he does when he comes off pick-and-rolls. When I don’t have the ball, (I’ll) be able to cut and use him to be able to get looks. He’s a great passer as well.”

Defensively, Culver and his teammates will continue to prioritize point-of-attack defending, especially with Karl-Anthony Towns, their top rim protector, out with a wrist injury for the time being.

“You’ve got to be a much better team guarding at the point of attack and guarding off the dribble along the perimeter,” Saunders said when asked about the challenges of defending without a true rim protector on the court. “Easiest way to hide maybe not having a great rim protector is to not allow the ball to get to the rim. It sounds very simple, but it’s hard to do.

“Tonight’s a good challenge for us in that sense because Boston has a number of guys who are very good at attacking the rim. As competitors, you look for these challenges and you want these challenges for our team and for our growth. We’ll be able to learn from it one way or another.”

James Johnson, who’s listed as 6-foot-7 on the Wolves’ roster, will share rim-protecting duties with 6-foot-9 Naz Reid while Towns recovers from his injury. On Friday, Johnson made it explicitly clear that he’s up for the challenge of filling in as center when called upon.

“I’ve got one of the biggest hearts in the league,” Johnson said. “I don’t think bench pressing or anything else like that is going to prepare me for the skilled big men in our league these days. I think I hold my own.”

Update On Layman’s First Practice After Injury

Wolves forward Jake Layman was cleared to practice on Thursday after missing three months of the season due to a sprained toe.

On Friday, Saunders said Layman “looked good” and that Thursday’s training-camp-like practice served him well.

“It was good for Jake too to be able to get involved in some of those types of teaching drills and some of those high-intensity drills, too,” Saunders said.

Wolves Set Goal Checklists For Remainder Of Season

Most Timberwolves beat reporters ran with highlights the Wolves’ hot 3-point shooting when recapping Saturday’s rejuvenating 142-115 win over the Clippers.

The Wolves were seemingly unstoppable as they fired away from beyond the arc and hit a franchise record of 26 3s in the game after releasing just 44 attempts. The reaction to seeing the new Wolves torching an above-average Clippers defense was just as electric as the sharpshooting itself.

But there were two shots that garnered the same reaction and shouldn’t be overlooked — Jordan McLaughlin’s back-to-back dunks.

McLaughlin’s first slam came about one minute, 30 seconds into the third quarter. Now, this is a completely different Wolves team from two weeks ago, but let’s just say third quarters have tended to be pretty low-energy for the Wolves of the past. McLaughlin played a large part in making sure that stayed in the past.

After receiving an outlet pass from Juancho Hernangomez, McLaughlin dribbled up the left side of the court, recognized two screens coming his way from Hernangomez and Towns on the right side but rejected the picks, crossed up Kawhi Leonard and attacked a wide-open driving lane. When the perimeter defenders were too slow to help, McLaughlin took it to the hole over a trailing, 7-foot Ivica Zubac and threw down the one-handed slam.

Just over a minute later, McLaughlin received a hand-off from Hernangomez at the top of the key, and once again made former Defensive Player of the Year Leonard look out of sorts. This time, his explosiveness ended in a reverse dunk. For those who watched the Oscars on Sunday night, remember how loud Dolby Theatre got after Jane Fonda announced “Parasite” had won Best Picture? That’s basically how Target Center reacted.

My favorite aspect of McLaughlin’s dunks is how unexpected they are. He stands at under 6-feet, making him the shortest player on the court and an easy target for underestimation on most nights. But we’ve quickly learned height isn’t a barrier in McLaughlin’s game.

At Monday’s shootaround, McLaughlin said his dunks are often spur of the moment rather than calculated decisions.

“Sometimes I’m more aggressive at times or else I use a floater or something,” McLaughlin said, “but there’s no telling when it’s going to happen. It just happens.”

When it does happen, it’s an indescribable feeling for the young point guard.

“I can’t really describe it,” McLaughlin said. “When I can make it happen, I try to make it happen.”

The Wolves will need McLaughlin to play as aggressively as he did Saturday night when they face the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Arena on Monday night. The Raptors currently rep the second-best defensive rating in the league (104.9), which has helped them boast a 14-game winning streak since Jan. 15.

Toronto’s opponents are shooting just 33.6% from beyond the arc this season (second-lowest percentage in the league) and scoring the second-fewest amount of points in the paint (41.9 per game).

The new Wolves know one blowout win over the Clippers doesn’t mean much and are embracing the Raptors will present Monday night.

“There are challenges in everything; it’s just part of the league,” Wolves head coach Ryan Saunders said. “It’s part of the job, and as competitors, you want challenges. You don’t want things to always be easy. Because when you make it through the challenge, you see guys grasp what you’re trying to install and what you’re trying to do as an organization. The struggle makes the reward feel a lot better.

“If we can take care of ourselves and what we can control today, the outcome will take care of itself.”

“We’re trying to take one game one step at a time,” McLaughlin added. “With our new team, we’re just going to keep getting better day by day and game by game, and we’re looking forward to this challenge.”

The latest Wolves injury report shows that D’Angelo Russell (quad) is questionable to play in Monday night’s game in Toronto.

When asked about whether Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns’ close relationship makes implementing the new point guard into the Wolves’ rotation — which is quite new itself — easier, Saunders was hopeful yet practical.

“My hope would be (their relationship) would speed up the process,” Saunders said. “But my realistic approach is that there’s always going to be growing pains or just a get-to-know you type period. I’m expecting the unexpected. We’ve got a lot of new faces, so every night isn’t going to be a great night, but we can do our best in our preparation to make every night a great night.”

The Wolves faced Dirk Nowitzki likely for the last time on Wednesday night and on Friday they get a shot at another NBA legend—Dywane Wade. It’s looking to be a special night at Target Center. On top of it being Wolves fans’ final chance to see Wade play it’s also the last chance to see the Wolves’ City Edition Prince jerseys in a game. 

Outside of all that, tonight could be a very good basketball game. The Wolves have been competitive lately and are building a culture that doesn’t accept or excuse losing, regardless of whether or not they can make the playoffs.

“As people can see we’re still competitive and these guys are still approaching it, it sounds cliché, but like we still have a chance to make the playoffs,” said Interim Head Coach Ryan Saunders. “Shootarounds are as focused as they’ve ever been. I think guys understand that we have a lot of things we have to work on moving towards the summer and into next year and I think guys are taking that to heart.”

Anthony Tolliver has been on quite a few teams and he’s seen what giving up can do to a team emotionally. NBA players are built to want to win and when that doesn’t happen, bad things can happen unless the culture is strong.

“This league is a lot about mindset. If you’re on a team or part of an organization and lose a lot, it wears on you. It kind of carries into the following years,” he said. “A lot of people talk about losing organizations, there’s a reason why there are losing organizations. I feel like a lot of habits and thoughts go into year after year after year. Finishing the year strong is ultra-important, for us as individuals but also us as a team.” 

The end of the season is also a time to develop younger players. Because of injuries, players like Josh Okogie, Keita-Bates Diop and Cam Reynolds have had a chance to shine. They’ve taken advantage of that chance. Okogie has developed into a great defender and has improved his playmaking a ton. Bates-Diop has proven himself to be a great switching defender with NBA athleticism. Reynolds has worked his way from a 10-day contract into a consistent role for the team. The time to develop guys pays off for the franchise down the road.

“You want to put give guys challenges early in games, and we’ve done that a number of times with Josh were we’re starting him on the best offensive player pretty much every game,” said Saunders. “That’s what we’re trying to see, if he’s able to do that. He’s done a good job for the most part. Obviously, there are still instances where we all need to improve, but you’d hope he’d be a guy… where you wouldn’t have any drop-off when you take Robert (Covington) out next season, that you’d put Josh in and he’d pick up where he left off.”

Reynolds still has plenty to learn and the goal is to land a spot on this team when the 2019-20 season begins.

“This is definitely an audition. I got to come to work and put my best foot forward every single day. That’s how I think about it, but I try not to put pressure on myself, I just come out and play basketball like I’ve been doing my whole life.”

Still, Reynolds gives himself time to reflect on how far he’s come. When he takes the floor on Friday, he’ll do so opposite a childhood idol, one he now has a chance to beat. D-Wade.

“It’s an honor to play against him, he’s someone I watched growing up, I had his poster in my room. He made me want to get converse when he first came out,” said Reynolds. “It’s an honor but it just goes to the same, they want to get in to the playoffs and we want to stop them. That’s our goal.”

Shootaround Report | Dywane Wade’s Farewell Tour, A Season Of Opportunity

The Wolves have gone up against tough competition every game in the last week and they’ll have another test on Monday when they face the Portland Trail Blazers. While the Blazers will be missing CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic, Damian Lillard is still a huge threat. 

“He’s obviously tough to guard but the way he gets his points, he scores in so many different ways. Scores from three, he’s obviously good from the free-throw line, and then him getting to the basket too. He’s tough,” said Interim Head Coach Ryan Saunders.

The task of guarding Lillard will fall primarily to Josh Okogie and Tyus Jones. Both are solid defenders, but Lillard does so many things well they’ll need to be locked in from the start. There isn’t much room for error. 

“He’s been extremely aggressive playing great basketball, so you got to be ready from the jump for him to come out and look to assert himself. Obviously, that’s what they need being a little banged up,” said Jones. “We got to be ready for him. He’s a guy who can get hot quick and put up crazy numbers. You can’t come into it thinking he’s going to ease his way into the game. He’s going to be ready to go.”

The Wolves are no stranger to injuries themselves and they used one of their open roster spots to bring in Mitch Creek, a combo forward from Australia. Creek has been playing well in the G-League and previously played two 10-day contracts with the Brooklyn Nets.

“We like his upside, he’s been good in the G-League, and we like how hard he plays, which is something you need especially when you do get younger. Also every report we’ve gotten from people is how good he is for a culture too and for a team so that’s something that definitely has to be noted,” said Saunders.

Creek is obviously excited for the opportunity to don another NBA jersey.

“Any time you get to pull on an official NBA team jersey it’s always a privilege,” said Creek. “I’m absolutely thrilled, I’m excited to be here. Speaking to coach and the guys and all the staff here it’s been a really easy transition and warm welcome, so I’m looking forward to the next 10 days.”

For Creek, the opportunity to play in the NBA is about more than just himself, it’s an opportunity to raise the profile of the sport of basketball in Australia. Excitement around basketball is growing there and seeing players make it at the highest level goes a long way.

“You just want to try and ignite the passion for a young kid or a young boy or girl or family member that now loves basketball because someone they know has made it and stepped into the light for a change,” said Creek. “I feel Australian basketball is at a great level right now and this solidifies that we’re on the map. If we continue to do things like this with other players as well, it’s only good things for Australia.”

While the Wolves are eliminated from the playoffs, we saw over the weekend that they are still very competitive. Jones said that the team is obviously still motivated to win—that’s why they play.

“It’s a different motivation with the playoffs not in the picture. You’re always motivated as a player, that’s what you play the game for—you love to compete, you love to win—so it’s a different motivation,” said Jones. “We’re trying to work on the Minnesota Timberwolves, we’re trying to get better as a group every day and improve, and we’re still trying to win each and every night we step out there.”

Shootaround Report | Stopping Dame, Welcoming Mitch Creek

The Wolves have two intense games in front of them as they face the Golden State Warriors on Friday night and the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night. While both will be tough contests, there are quite a few things that the Wolves have seen in their last few games that give them cause for optimism.

The biggest thing has been the aggressive play of Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins has been very intentional about getting to the hoop lately and that effort is showing up in his play.

“We like his aggression early in games, his ability to get downhill is a good thing,” said Interim Head Coach Ryan Saunders. “I think also he’s been reading defenses a little bit better. When he sees a big is in a drop, he’s able to snake it back or use his euro step, then he’s getting better in terms of the shot selection with midrange, what’s a good midrange shot, getting to the rim, but we’re really stressing him getting to the rim on things.”

His teammates see it too. They know that when Wiggins plays well they are far more likely to get a victory.

“That’s what we need out of him—we need him to be aggressive,” said Tyus Jones. “Obviously, he’s a dynamic scorer so when he’s scoring at a high clip that brings another weapon to the table for us that we need. We try to get him going early, try to get him in rhythm early, cause once he’s going, once he’s hit a few shots, he’s hard to stop." 

When Wiggins gets going early, it does more for the Wolves than just provide scoring—it sets a tone for the entire night and helps spread energy to the rest of the group. There’s a lot that Wiggins’ scoring does for the team outside of just creating scoring opportunities.

“I think showing the aggression early shows everybody that we have an engaged group for the night, and that’s a big positive especially with a younger team, and that brings the energy of everybody up. Then also what that does is when he’s getting all the way to the rim that forces defenses to honor that.”

Another encouraging thing has been the play of Josh Okogie. After a bit of a down few games earlier in the month he’s rebounded well. His playmaking, in particular, has been excellent. The game is clearly slowing down for him and he’s seeing the floor very well. Distributing the ball is a great new facet of Okogie’s game.

“He goes 110 percent all the time and that’s great but coming with that is going to come a few mistakes just from getting sped up,” said Jones. “Obviously, the speed of the game is different and you’ve got to adjust, so I think he’s starting to adjust, see what’s working, what didn’t work, and that’s all you ask for—to continue to learn, grow and get better.”

Okogie attributes his success to the people around him being patient with him and helping him work through things one game at a time.

“I’m just trying to make the reads I can, and I think it’s a credit to my coaches always there for me, you know, watching film with me after the game so I can see what’s going to be there next game and see what I didn’t see the previous games and make adjustments.”

After practicing on Monday for the first time in a while, the Wolves held shootaround on Tuesday to prepare for their game against the Clippers. Despite the adversity Minnesota has gone through, they continue to be optimistic about their chances in every game. They’re staying focused and making good progress. 

“We still have a good chunk of the season left where there’s a lot of things that we can build. That’s what we’ve been talking about. We had a good practice yesterday and guys have been great in terms of their attentiveness through things, which can be a challenge at the end of the year,” said Interim Coach Ryan Saunders. “Guys are welcoming the idea of building and moving forward.” 

Though the Wolves have been eliminated from playoff contention, that shouldn’t be taken to mean they have nothing to play for. It’s important to get good momentum headed into summer workouts and to outline both positives to build on and negatives to work on. 

“You always want to use every situation as one to build upon,” said Saunders. “I’ve been a part of teams that have been eliminated from playoff contention, but they’ve continued to work and they’ve continued to put the work in. Sometimes the wins come and sometimes they don’t, but you get better and that does translate. You feel good about yourselves carrying over into the summer then move forward towards the next season.” 

Even without the playoff hunt to motivate them, the Wolves are taking a lot out of their last stretch of games this season. Going forward, the goal is to make sure that they can find a way to play at their highest potential ever night, not just every few games. 

“The way we played at Memphis was encouraging—to see the things we talk about, the things we practice are being retained,” said Karl-Anthony Towns. “We did a lot of good things, but now it’s about consistency. That’s what makes an NBA team a great team. That’s what we got to do, build that consistency night in and night out, have that same kind of identity.”

These last few weeks of the season can be particularly impactful for rookies, who have a chance to go into their first NBA offseason strong. Josh Okogie has looked great the last few games and should be well set up to continue making strides.

“Over these last five games he’s had great confidence,” said Saunders. “Sometimes all it takes is one game or one flow of the game or segment of the game In Houston you saw him get a good rhythm, and a lot of the times when you’re defending that translates into offense too, and that goes both ways.” 

Thinking long term is great, but on Tuesday, Okogie will have a more immediate challenge of matching up with the red-hot Lou Williams. It should be a fun matchup, as should Towns vs. the Clippers’ frontcourt. To see it yourself, get your tickets here.

Shootaround Report | Opportunities For Growth, Okogie’s Excellent Stretch

The Wolves got some less-than-ideal injury news this morning, with Jeff Teague, Robert Covington and Derrick Rose expected to miss the remainder of the season. While it hurts to be shorthanded, the lack of depth at guard is an opportunity for Tyus Jones to shine. He will be the Wolves’ starting point guard for the remainder of the season.

Jones is ready for the challenge. He boasts an impressive 6.5 assist to turnover ratio, which leads the NBA. Getting Jones more minutes to operate is big for the Wolves—he’s a big part of the team’s future and if he can maintain his efficiency with a larger minute load he could put up some great numbers.

“Everything starts with the point guard, in terms of getting organized, in terms of really knowing what you want out of the offense,” said Interim Head Coach Ryan Saunders. “It hasn’t translated into wins as of late, but we’re building something, we feel, in terms of trying to move the ball, trying to get the ball in different areas, and having a point guard like Tyus who’s able to do that and is able to continue to grow to do that is a good thing.”

For Jones, it’s all about staying composed. He’s a quick thinker with a high basketball I.Q., but it’s important to Jones that he continues to stick with what is working instead of trying to force things.

“Just trying to stick with what works for me, just being smart,” he said. “Not taking too many risks on the court, not trying to thread the needle too much in certain situations, just sticking to playing my game. Even with the increased minutes I’m not getting too outside myself.”

On a team like the Wolves, who are built around a generationally talented post player, the point guard spot takes on even more importance. Getting the ball to Karl-Anthony Towns isn’t easy—opposing teams often make denying him the ball a priority. That makes patience even more important.

“It’s a quick decision, a lot of quick decisions, small windows out there, but trying to make those decisions to the best of my ability, trying to eliminate the 50/50 passes. Just be smart with the ball out there and make sure I’m not turning the ball over,” said Jones.

Injuries are never good, but giving Jones some time to develop as the unquestioned starter at point guard could pay dividends for the team.

“There’s no way around it, we’ve gone through a hard stretch.
