Wolves Host Area Fit Clinic

The Timberwolves put on Fit Clinics on Feb. 5 and Feb. 19 as part of the FastBreak Foundation’s WolvesFit Month, presented by The Medtronic Foundation’s HeartRescue project. The Wolves sent players Brandon Roy, Chris Johnson, Mickael Gelabale and Dante Cunningham, as well as player development coach Shawn Respert, into the community to present the importance physical fitness throughout a person’s lifetime.

“We feel like forming those habits are extremely important in today’s world,” Respert said. “It just seems like youth today, every generation seems to take some things for granted. I think the thing today is awareness, that a little bit of activity every day, a little bit of healthier foods brings I think a greater awareness and a greater appreciation of being in great shape and being able to do a lot of activities they want to do anyway.”

Throughout the month of February, the FastBreak Foundation will help encourage and promote that type of fitness awareness. Their $5,000 grant presentation for the month went to the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities area, and at each of the eight home games this month the Foundation will honor a Hero in the Making who are focused on health and fitness for area youth.

In addition, Wolves guard Ricky Rubio will team up with Medtronic to unveil the latest life-saving innovation, an interactive online experience called the “Save-A-Life Simulator” found on HeartRescueNow.com. Using first person point-of-view videos, the viewer joins Rubio for a workout at the gym where they both witness a person collapse from SCA.

On Feb. 5 at the first installment of the Wolves’ Fit Clinic, Cunningham said the biggest goal is to make sure the kids can take some of that activity with them throughout their lives.

“Just work out with the kids a little bit,” Cunningham said. “Show them a couple exercise they can do at home. Work out and just stay fit, stretch out a little bit and help them for the longer part of their lives.”
