Suns Complete Deal with Boston for Thornton, Draft Pick

The Phoenix Suns today completed a deal to acquire Cleveland’s protected 2016 first-round pick and guard Marcus Thornton from the Boston Celtics in exchange for guard Isaiah Thomas.

The Suns received Cleveland’s 2016 first-round pick (protected to 10) from the Celtics in the deal. Boston initially acquired the pick from the Cavaliers in a three-team trade also involving Brooklyn on July 10, 2014.

Thornton, in his sixth NBA season out of Louisiana State University, joins the Suns after averaging 8.9 points and 16.4 minutes in 39 games with the Celtics this season. The 6-4 guard holds career averages of 12.9 points on 43.0 percent shooting, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 380 games with New Orleans (2009-11), Sacramento (2011-14), Brooklyn (2014) and Boston (2014-15). An explosive scorer, Thornton averaged a career-best 18.7 points with the Kings in 2011-12 and boasts 11 career games with at least 30 points including two games scoring 40-plus.
