In conjunction with yesterday’s announcement by the City of New Orleans, ASM Global and the New Orleans Pelicans announced today that the Smoothie King Center will lift the mandatory COVID-19 vaccination and testing requirements at Pelicans home games. Effective immediately, fans will no longer be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to gain entry into the arena.

As of March 3, 2022, the City of New Orleans’ indoor mask mandate has been lifted. Masks are no longer required inside the Smoothie King Center.

The New Orleans Pelicans and the Smoothie King Center recommend that guests be vaccinated, stay up to date with booster shots, and carefully assess their own health and safety risks prior to entering the venue.

The Pelicans will continue to work closely with local and state officials, Ochsner Health, and ASM Global to monitor CDC health and safety guidance.

The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that the team will host a limited number of fans at the Smoothie King to begin the 2020-21 NBA season.

Starting with its preseason game against the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow night, which has been sold out, the Pelicans and Smoothie King Center will begin with a capacity of approximately four-percent, or 750 fans, with no seats within 30 feet of the court. In addition, a limited number of tickets to satisfy player, team and other required NBA obligations was additionally approved. The capacity for games throughout the season will be determined by local health data and in conjunction with city and state officials, health and safety experts and guidance from Ochsner Health and the NBA.

“As we continue to navigate these unusual times and circumstances, we have partnered with health and safety officials, both on the local and state level, the NBA, ASM Global and Ochsner Health to create a world-class game day experience for our fans entering the Smoothie King Center,” said Pelicans President Dennis Lauscha. “Similar to what we have been able to accomplish at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, we have developed a plan to make the Smoothie King Center one of the safest venues in the country to attend a basketball game.”

Fan attendance protocols will involve extensive health and safety measures, including socially distanced seating. Per NBA rules, face coverings will be mandatory for all fans and staff in attendance, and must be worn at all times (other than while actively eating and drinking). Neck gaiters, bandanas, or masks with valves or vents will not be permitted in the Smoothie King Center.

Upon entering the building, all patrons will be required to take a temperature check along with a fan symptom and exposure survey. Additionally, guests will be issued staggered entrance times to enter the Smoothie King Center pregame in an effort to promote social distancing when arriving to the arena.

The Pelicans and Smoothie King Center have adopted a 100-percent paperless and contactless experience for guests. All tickets and parking passes will be mobile, and all merchandise and concession stands will exclusively be card sales only.

New Orleans Pelicans announce plans to host limited number of fans for games at Smoothie King Center with NBA and local health protocols

David Maas, half of the husband-and-wife duo Quick Change, died Nov. 22 from Covid-19. He was 57. Halftimes across the NBA never will be the same.

David and his wife Dania started their act in 1996 and rose to prominence following their appearance on "America's Got Talent" in 2006. They appeared at numerous New Orleans Pelicans games as part of their travels around the NBA and college basketball with their last performance at the Smoothie King Center on Nov. 17, 2019.

The act was simple, silly, and fun. For seven minutes the pair would sashay around the basketball court, making one grand gesture after another, using large pieces of fabric to conceal Dania’s outfit change, the swap happening in seconds. In their last performance in New Orleans Dania even changed her hair color from brunette to blonde. Their background in the circus and magic world was evident with their showmanship, the outsized movements and props used to distract from the secrets of their show.

In this Tik Tok era of instant entertainment being delivered to your phone in 15-second vertical bursts faster than you can scroll, Quick Change harkened to a simpler, slower, more horizontal time when we were willing to wait for the payoff, the big reveal, the climactic change usually being performed to the theme song from “Rocky.”

But even though everyone in attendance had seen their act, fans stayed in their seats, eyes up, to watch David and Dania perform. They were part of the upper echelon of halftime performers, on the Mount Rushmore with the majestic Red Panda, the ZOOperstars and the Simon Says dude.

In a way, these halftime acts represent what 2020 has been like. One dizzying change after another, with numerous bowls being tossed at our head as we try to catch and keep our balance on the unicycle, swaying back and forth.

No definitive announcement has been made on whether the NBA will allow performers to take to the basketball court at halftime this season, but it seems unlikely in this Covid world we’re living in. It’s fitting in a way that if David and Dania cannot take the court this season that no one will step in to take their spot in the traveling circus of halftime acts.

The final curtain has dropped, the last change has been made. Take a bow. We’ll miss you.

In an announcement on social media on Saturday, New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson pledged to cover the salaries of all workers at the Smoothie King Center for 30 days amid the NBA's action to suspend game play for the 2019-20 season.

Williamson took to Instagram to announce the donation, and his appreciation for the Smoothie King Center staff since his arrival in New Orleans after being selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft.

On March 11, the NBA announced that the league was suspending game play until further notice in response to a player on the Utah Jazz preliminarily testing positive for COVID-19. The statement from the league said it would use the haitus to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the coronavirus pandemic.

Williamson wrote: The people of New Orleans have been incredibly welcoming and supportive since I was Drafted by the Pels last June, and some of the most special people I have met are those who work at smoothie King Center. These are the folks who make our games possible, creating the perfect environment for our fans and everyone involved in the organization. Unfortunately, many of them are still recovering from long term challenges created by Katrina, and now face the economic impact of the postponement of games because of the virus. My mother has always set an example for me about being respectful for others and being grateful for what we have, and so today I am pledging to cover the salaries for all of those Smoothie King Center workers for the next 30 days. This is a small way for me to express my support and appreciation for these wonderful people who have been so great to me and my teammates and hopefully we can all join together to relieve some of the stress and hardship caused by this national health crisis. This is an incredibly resilient city full of some of the most resilient people, but sometimes providing a little extra assistance can make things a little easier for the community.

Pelicans Zion Williamson pledges to cover salaries for Smoothie King Center workers for 30 days

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Pelicans will host an open practice at the Smoothie King Center on Saturday, October 5 at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are limited.

Full season ticket holder and partial season ticket holders will have exclusive access to claim free tickets on Wednesday, Sept. 18 and the general public will have access on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Open practice offers fans a firsthand look at the 2019-20 Pelicans team and features appearances from the Pelicans Dance Team and the Pelicans Swoop Troop, in addition to giveaways. Concession stands will be open during the event.

Fans can download their free tickets at www.pelicans.com/openpractice. There is a limit of four tickets per person and seating is general admission.

Doors for the event will open at 5:00 p.m. Fans should enter through the Northeast ground, located adjacent to the Pelicans team shop on Dave Dixon Drive. Complimentary parking will be available in Garage #2 and Garage #5.
