Off the Court: Pelicans forward John Salmons

By a wide margin, John Salmons is the New Orleans Pelicans’ most experienced player, having debuted in the NBA in 2002, with his hometown Philadelphia 76ers. Now 34 years old, he was a standout in college at the University of Miami (Fla.) and a first-round draft pick. He joined Pelicans.com to discuss some of his background and interests away from the game:

Best moments as an athlete: “Winning a state championship in high school. In college, we won the Big East. Then getting drafted by the NBA. That’s what everyone shoots for as a player and dreams of as a player.”

How he chose his current uniform number of 15: “Since high school, I always had a 5 in my number, except for having 7 when I was with Philadelphia. When I left Philly for Sacramento, I changed to 15. I don’t know why. For some reason it just came to me. I think 15 is probably my favorite number.”

Favorite thing about New Orleans: “The food is great.”

Pregame ritual: “I take a nap before most games, but it’s not something I have to do.”

First job: “I never had a job before the NBA.”

Favorite athletes as a kid: “Michael Jordan, by far. And Mike Tyson, who was just so exciting to watch. I was a big Tyson fan.”

What he’d be doing if he weren’t an NBA player: “Something in politics.”

Closest friends currently playing on other NBA teams: “There are a lot of guys. Too many to list. I’ve been in the league for a while.” [smiles]

Favorite type of music: “Hip-hop.”

Favorite movies of all time: “The Usual Suspects.”

Favorite website: “Hoopshype.com.”
