Prospect Q&A: Willie Cauley-Stein

By Leonard Davis and Steven Blevins

Q: “How did your first official workout of the summer go today?”

A: “I think it went fairly well. The altitude is different; I think that was the biggest thing. You feel like you are in shape coming in here, but once you get here and you start jogging, it feels like 100 pounds on your shoulder. This is my first time in Colorado so I had never felt it before, it’s different, but once you get your second wind it’s not as bad.”

Q: “Is it hard to not pay attention to the hype leading up the draft? Or do you like looking at it, maybe looking at the city you might go to and gauge your future a bit?”

A: “I really leave it up to my agent. I live day to day, what did I do today that was better than yesterday? I don’t really look at the draft, or who is going where, I don’t care. Regardless, I am going to have a chip on my shoulder, I am not going to be where I want to be. I look at it like I am better than these guys, but they are going to get drafted the way they are going to get drafted. People see something I don’t see, so I am going to have a chip on my shoulder when I go into it.”

Q: “Did you try and familiarize yourself with the needs of Denver and go into the workout focused on that, or did you come into this with a general mindset on how you wanted to perform?”

A: “I just came in and did what I do best. That’s what they have seen anyways, they wouldn’t have asked you to come here if they saw something in you they didn’t like. I just do what I always do, and try to do it at the highest level.”

Q: “What’s one thing you would want the Nuggets organization and their fans to know about you?”

A: “I am extremely loyal, if I am selected, l will be a Denver Nugget until the end. I have a strong work ethic; I work really hard.”

Q: “What does the rest of your summer look like?”

A: “I have more workouts, I don’t necessarily know the schedule of the workouts, but I am working out in Sacramento next, then Orlando, with the Knicks, then Miami, but I don’t know the dates on those. I am just trying to get in as much work before the draft.”
