Prospect Q&A: DJ Newbill

By Leonard Davis and Steven Blevins

Q: “How did you feel you performed today?”

A: “I think the workout went great. I got some shots up, I just competed, that’s what I like to do, I like to compete. I like to be the most competitive person in the gym, when we do things like this, I appreciate it.”

Q: “You led the Big Ten last year in scoring, did you feel like the drills you did today were conducive to your skills as a scorer?”

A: “I like competing one on one. I was fortunate to have a great teammate who set a lot screens for me. The one on ones, we were put in situations that I have prepared for during my training. A lot of the stuff I was ready for, but it was up to me to put it together and showcase what I can do in front of the scouts and make big plays against guys like Cameron [Payne] and Trey [Lyles].”

Q: “Did you try and familiarize yourself with the needs the Nuggets might have heading into the draft and tailor your workout towards that?”

A: “I come in and I’m myself. If they like me they like me, if they don’t they don’t, but I will always be myself. I came out here, played hard and physical, and was one of the biggest competitors out here on the court. That’s one of the Nuggets strengths. They compete at a high level and play tough which fits the way I play.”

Q: “What’s one thing you would want the Nuggets organization and the fans here in Denver to know about you?”

A: “When I step on the court I am the biggest competitor out there. There is nobody who is going to match that intensity.”

Q: “10 days left until the draft, what do you have planned until the big day?”

A: More workouts, this is actually my third workout in a row. I had the Pacers yesterday, then the Lakers, and now here.

Q: “With your third workout in a row, it didn’t seem like the altitude got to you at all, especially coming off two workouts. Did you notice it?”

A: Yeah definitely, but my heart and my will won’t let me stop. If I am feeling it, you won’t notice, that’s me being gritty. It was definitely different, especially during the active stretch, but my will pushed me through these workouts.
