Prospect Q&A: Darion Atkins

By Leonard Davis and Steven Blevins

Q: “You have worked out with a few teams already, and now you are finishing up another with the Nuggets. How has this process gone so far for you?”

A: “So far it’s been a great process. I am blessed to be in this position, this is my seventh team to work out for, and I didn’t think I would be doing this. I played well in Portsmouth, got teams interested, and I was brought in to guard Dekker, and it has been a lot of fun so far.”

Q: “You were named ACC defensive player of the year, and the Lefty Dreisell defensive player of the year. You did this in a conference with a lot of competition, some big name programs and players. You come in to today’s workout with a bunch of really good shooters in Sam Dekker, Devin Booker, and Jerian Grant. Did that seem like an opportunity to showcase your defensive skills?”

A: “Definitely, that’s what teams want to see from me. They want to see that, I want to show my offensive game too, but if a team wants to see my defense then I will give it to them. That’s what I specialize in, I am defender, I rebound, I run the floor hard, and I score opportunistically. The Nuggets wanted to see that, and when I get a chance to showcase that it’s a lot of fun.”

Q: “This is just one piece of really the ultimate job interview. Does the importance of that create any nerves, or creep into your mind at all, or do you treat this like any other practice?”

A: “Starting off it was more so the nerves getting to me, because it is a job interview, you are out here playing for money, trying to make a team. You try and play as hard as you can, but I take it for what it is, if I play as hard as I can then everything else will take care of itself. The nervousness goes away when I start playing, I have fun with it.”

Q: “What is one thing you would want the Nuggets organization and the fans in Denver to know about you?”

A: “I am a hard worker, I love the game, I don’t take backseats to anyone. I would love to be a part of this organization, and I would love to guard Wilson Chandler.”

Q: “What are the rest of your plans for the summer? Do you have any more workouts planned?”

A: “I have workouts leading up to the draft, it will be a total of 16 workouts, and I already had Utah, the Spurs, Miami, Golden State, Phoenix, and here. It’s a grind, but I am just happy to be a part of it.”
