Denton: Jones Earns Roster Spot

Added Magic coach Jacque Vaughn: ``Plain and simple, he did what we asked him to do, He came in and provided a great work in practice and games and he kept things simple. He rebounded the basketball for us, played extremely hard and defensively he was good for us in a lot of ways.’’

The Magic open the regular season on Tuesday night in Indiana against the Pacers, finalists in the Eastern Conference playoffs last spring. Indiana has one of the game’s most rugged frontlines in David West, Roy Hibbert and Paul George, and they will present an enormous physical challenge right away for the Magic. Vaughn will likely use starters Nikola Vucevic and Jason Maxiell and reserves Kyle O’Quinn, Andrew Nicholson and Jones to combat the size and rebounding abilities of the Pacers.

``It’s going to be a good test for us to see where we’re at with our own selves to see how physical we are down low,’’ Maxiell said. ``I’ve been guarding (West) for going on nine years, so I pretty much know his game and what he wants to do. Matching up with him is going to be like an every-day job for me.’’
