The Charlotte Bobcats will receive the Detroit Pistons’ First Round pick IF it is outside the top 8. If the Pistons are slotted anywhere between 1 and 8, the stipulation becomes protected in 2015 only if Detroit lands the No. 1 overall pick. Otherwise, it will be unprotected completely in 2016.

HOW IT HAPPENED: It was agreed to as part of the Ben Gordon for Corey Maggette swap in the summer of 2012.

ANALYSIS: The Pistons were simply trying to shed salary to free up cap space for the summer of 2013, in which they ultimately signed Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings. It’s hard to say at this point whether Detroit will be a playoff team this season, but Charlotte is desperately hoping they are not and the stipulation continues into next season when it could be a much more rewarding draft pick.
