Stockton’s Big League Dreams

Reno Bighorns guard David Stockton’s period with the Kings may have been limited, but the experience of his time spent in Sacramento was invaluable.

On Wednesday night in Reno, two days after his 10-day contract ended with the Kings, Stockton exploded for a season-high 44 points, 10 assists, eight steals and seven boards to lead the Bighorns over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 158-152.

Prior to heading back to Reno to rejoin the Bighorns, Rui Thomas of Cowbell Kingdom spoke to Stockton about his experience in Sacramento.

“Everybody is bigger, stronger, faster (than the D-League),” Stockton told Thomas.

With the NBA being a guard heavy league, Stockton knew his impact would have to be immediate, but was unable to find quality time behind staring guard Ray McCallum and new veteran addition Andre Miller.

Stockton’s debut came in the final seven minutes of a 126-99 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 21. With a stat line of one point, one assist, two rebounds, and two turnovers, the Kings coaching staff offered the young guard tips to continue to see on-court time.

“They just want me to play hard, play fast, make good decisions and play defense,” echoed David.

While the Gonzaga product may not have received the news he hoped for with 10 more days on the Kings roster, he returned to Reno with a statement game and an even stronger desire to achieve his life-long goal to be a part of the NBA.
